Kawasaki rider Sid Pogue cut the first-ever under·nine second run in Pro Stock racing (8.98 sec.) during eliminations. Vance beat Pogue in a semi-final run. Ohter winners included Elmer Trett (H-D) in the Top Fuel division. Dede Cates took home the overall victory and the title of Women's National MX Championship after three moto wins and a runner·up placing at the Women's National MX Championship held at Carlsbad International Raceway in Carlsbad, CA. Dede rode a 1980 Suzuki RMl25 to a sweep of the l25cc Pro class and then piloted a works Honda 250 (black engine, double downtube frame) to second overall in the 250cc Pro competition; her 1-2 placing being edged out by Kawasaki-mounted Barbara Spielman's 2·1. Spielman placed second overall in the competition with defending champ Carey Steiner (Yam) third. Mercedes Gonzalez, (Suz) took the overall Amateur honors while Yvette Husted (Mai) was top Novice. "I think I'll stay here and try for the Nationals and go for the Nationals championship'," Sun said. There's a strong chance that Marty Smith will be giving up his red, white and blue riding gear for a clean green outfit. Team Suzuki's Mark Barnett is still undecided, but there is a possibility he will contest the 250cc Nationals next year. He'll be riding a 250cc Suzuki in the Trans·USA S~ries. The SoCaI M.C. will be hosting a twOoday grand prix in Californie City on Oct. 20-21. The event win feature a 2G-mile course that ineludes desert and city street. and three races per day with each cI88s getting two full hours of racing. Free overnight camping is promised, along with a parade from Impound to the start area for each race, led by SoCaI mamber and California Stete Assemblyman J. Robert Hayes.
