It was a toss'up for top class of the night betwen the 91·112cc Modifieds where Larry Russell took a tie· breaker from Todd Tierney or the 113·132cc Modifieds where Perry Thompson squeaked out a close one over Davis Mueller or the Open Class wh~re former MXer Mark "Waitey" We.xeldorfer took a half· bike decision over Greg Fenton. Perry Thompson's 113·132cc win moved him into the class point lead. The ND Spark Plug Motocross Series and the Big AI's ATC Series continues throughout the month of August. In the Stock Experts, the "Burger King Bandit" took a close one over Danny Almond after first moto winner Kenny Dunlap retired with mechanical troubles. and in the wide open Modified Experts Swift grabbed a close second to Kawasaki rider David Hopwood, who took his firsl ever Ex~rt win at Barona. For Suzuki rider Kenny Dunlap it was a case of "win or break" as he took four out of six mota .wins, but could only get two of th.em In a row; those being in th~ SpeCIal 105cc Mini Class where the only contest was (or second place. The second' place race was a real barn burner though, and when it was all over, Intermediate rider Jon Faure (Kaw) found himself in second ahead of lots of Experts in a fine ride. First year rider Faure came back to take the 12 to 16-year·old Stock Intermediates over another freshman racer, Ami Lemon who in lurn squeaked out lhat position over new Intermediate Mike Fisher. BOlh riders were also Kawasaki mounted. Lemon came back in the Modifieds to lake the win over a charging Fisher who took the second spot in a tie breaker with Faure. Some ve.ry good racing in lhe 9·11 NOVICes. wJlh lots of new riders in both lhe Stock and Modified Divisions, with "vet~ran" John Flores (Suz) really putting JI togeth('r for a four for four effort and lWO impressive wins. Impressive nol only ht-cauS(' of the large fields. but also because Flores had to come from behind in both classes to do the deed on second·time· OUI rider Charles Dieball. The Minis stan~ things off and it was Bill Clomz, riding for John Burr's Cycle, who jum~ out front. Clontz h.eld the lead over another John Burr Tlder, "Racin' Jason" Prater who took an easy :w-cond. Behind Prater, 13· year·old Danny' Wawrzyniak (pronounced Warsnack) battled past Bryan Metzger, Ron Bell, T.D. Swets and Barry Crawford to claim a third overall. Seven· year-old Scott Marlow compleled thr~ of the five laps ;'n his Honda 50 while sweeper Todd Soens ke~t the youngster in sight for the ennre race. The heat was really on for the Seniors, but Competition Cycles' Charlie Conway played it cool. By the end of the first lap, he and his KTM were so far out front that second place was nowhere in sight. Bob Maynard was holding second place but Bryon Farnsworth. wearing all gr~n Kawasaki gear but riding a Yamaha, was giving him his run for his money. The Husky hung on, giving Maynard second and Farnswonh third. The top Amateurs, Phil Lawerance. T.W. Swets and John Campbell were also on Huskys. But it was Yamaha machines that monopJized the Novice and B~ginn~r positions. Danny Drew and Bill Anderson were top Novice riders while Jack Liddy and Ted Jones claimed top Beginners. Whe~ it comes to fan participation and excnment. the 81·200cc class has it all. Fullerton Yamaha's 19·year·old ~xpert. Roherl Pfetzing took the lead In the first lap. Right behind him was . a tight pack consisting of Escondido Suzuki's Jimmy Odie, Bill Holmes, Crawford and - B~IIf1ower Scott Yamaha's "Bullit," Kevin Senn, who had just moved up to the 125cc class.
