Barry Elliott took two GP wins at AFM's Riverside meeting, TIm Lunde topped the 12Scc Pro class at San Bernardino's CMC MX. Brooks blasts CMC San Berdoo MX By Tom Corley SAN BER AROLNO, CA, AUG. 10 All of the riders in the different classes are putting on a daring display of motocross racing. But last Friday night at the Orange 26 Show Fairgrounds the 500cc Pro class was the one to watch. Mark Brooks, Terry Clark and Bob Marino kept the fans' attention the whole time. Supported by Wheelsmith Motorcycles and Bel-Ray Oil, Mark Brooks from Anaheim is one of the top Pros in the Continental Moto-sports Club. Tonight Brooks had it ''111 together as he out-diced an equally competitive linepup of 500cc Pro riders. In the first moto Terry Clark shot out a.head and won the race cleanly. Brooks was after him and maintained the second place spot over Bob Marino. In the second and last moto the pressure was on and quite an intense battle was seen. Marino was doing very well till he locked bikes with Clark and they both hit the ground. Both riders recovered and resumed racing. Clark was out to catch Brooks who then had the lead. He was so determined to make the pass that he took chances all the time. These two riders evened out as the race progressed until they were side by side. On the very last lap they flew over a huge jump and were 15 feet in the air when they collided and locked their bikes up together! Clark slammed to the ground and tumbled a few times while Brooks made it to the checkered flag and then keeled over. Both were OK but roughed up a little. What a race to the end! Brooks won the big cash prize at the end of it all because of his fine 2-1 score, Marino was second on the payoff list and he edged out Alan Smith, Clark, "Sizzlin' Six." Mark Mangold and David Servais. The 500cc Juniors and Intermediates were combined in the 14th race and the rac.. sure got off to a bad start. Ron Brehm got out of control at the start of the first moto and he flipped his Yamaha. His bike moved to one side and he knocked two other riders down. The leader of the entire pack was Intermediate rider Rory Holladay. Rory wears one of the few bright red Rocket Rex Enterprises jerseys. Apparently Rex Staten is doing a little bike trickery for his personal friends around the neighborhood. Anyway Rory led both motos without much problem and is on the way to being a top Pro. Watch out Rex! The man who took second overall was Lee Granlee while Wheelsmith rider Dave Pettigrew switched t'o a Honda and won third over James Lorimer. The top 500 Junior riders were Bill Koch, Ron Brehm. who swung a S-S finish despite his crash, and Mike Giannallasio. Results MINI 50: 1. Nicky Pounds ISuzl; 2. Newton Acevedo ISuzl; 3. J..... AIen Smith 1Huol, _son £IIlott doubles at ARRARR By Patrick Behar RIVERSIDE, CA, AUG. 12 Since it was on the same date as the rained out Pocono National road race, this American Road Race Association meeting saw only the local club racers make the field, but Pat Manning, who never runs out of ideas, organized two vintage races which spiced up the afternoon. The action started right after that in the 250cc GP race where at th.. drop of the green flag, Barry Elliott a nd Ed Toomey stole the show, battling for the lead, The first three laps were commanded by Ellioll and his blue Yamaha with Toomey right behind. For Ed, it was only his second or third appearance In this class; he is more well known for his races in the 410cc Production class: On the third of the 10 laps, Toomey took the lead by passing Ellioll in turn six. Barry did exactly the same thing a lap later. The bailie kept on going until the checkered flag and it was only by a short distance that Ellioll took the honors. The same duo repeated the same scenario in the 500cc/Open GP race with Rick Mitchell on a Kawasaki KZ 1000 leading them for one lap. Toomey managed to pass the Superbike rider with Elliott doing the same thing two laps afterward. Once again it was the two Yamahas up front while Mitchell was black flagged when the turn marshalls suspected a broken exhaust pipe. Rick was able to come back on the track without losing any places. Ed Toomey seemed to have control of the situation tliree laps before the end. However, Bob DeWitt who was cruising behind. slipped on oil traces in turn six. didn't hit the wall but left a great deal of oil on the track which added to the traces left by a previous machine, The turn marshalls, busy helping Bob get his bike across the track, didn't signal the danger, and when Toomey came back, he couldn't avoid the crash. "The front end washed away. I couldn't do anything, but that's cool. I had a great time anyway," commented Ed afterwards. Ellioll went home with another trophy. Another big battle took place in the Four-stroke GP race, led at first by Whitney Blakeslee (Champion Kaw) and followed by Dennis Kempf (Escargot Suz) and Steve Sowden (Kaw). Whitney had to slow down when his KZlOOO developed dangerous wobbles_ He managed to finish third but had to let Kempf and Sowden by. Kempf stayed ahead for the following four laps before getting passed by Sowden. Steve did a great job on his Kawasaki and then later on, in the Cafe race. repeated his ride to add another victory to his credit. The Champion Kawasaki team were very impressive in the Open Box Stock and Production race. In the Box stock race Blakeslee was assured of an ..asy victory before running out of gas on his KZlOOO MKII, and he had to leave the victory to Aaron Post on a Suzuki. In the Production race, Whitney was joined by Lee Flemming on another Kawasaki (Lee's Ducati developed ignitio'J. pr~blc;ms c;a~lier and had to stay in the paddock). The duo didn't have any problems staying ahead and crossed the finish line in that order, while Mike Spencer on a KZ 650 was a very good third overall and first in the 750cc class. The next ARRA meeting will be on Sept. SO at Ontario Motor Speedway. Results BEG: 1. Aeron Post ISull; 2. Bruce Wilson lVom); 3. Tom DeW," lVem). 50cc GP: ,. Frenko <>-avoglill ISuzl; 2.
