This coming Thursday night, the very best in speedway, the top 32 riders in the sport will be trying to earn one of 16 spots in the U.S. Championship. That's August 23. The following week, there will be no speedway at Ascot because the whole show will be moved to Lancaster as part .of the county fair on the 30th. Speedway will be back at Ascot on Sept. 6. COSTA MESA, CA, AUG. 17 The red flag is used in speedway when there is an unsafe condition on the race track, like a rider pinned to the ground by his motorcycle or laying there unable to move. This past Friday night at Costa Mesa, the red flag got worn out, it was used so much! . Bob McLain will miss the qualifying rounds. the National, and the rest of the speedway season because of a badly broken right leg just below the knee. He got into the crash wall on the back straightaway, pinning his leg to the wall. He was well up on the overall pointS list and was figured to do quite well in tlie U.S. Speedway Championship; a big loss. Stan Flanders also got a ride to the hospital, with a deep cut on his forehead and a cracked bone in his hip. There was nothing wrong with the track, just one of those. nights that come along every couple of weeks to give you cold chills. Big Jim Fishback put the final tuck on his riding style at Costa Mesa, where he has. not fared too well in the past, by winning the Scratch Main Event, letting everyone know that next week he wants some of those all'important points toward the U.S. Final. The once-upon-a-time Junior Speedway riders topped. the rest of the show. Mike.Bloom, an ex Junior rider, won the Division Two Handicap Main Event. Shawn McConnell and Lance King led the way in the big money race, the Handicap Main Event. Shawn won the five-lap dash; King. a past Junior champ, took second. The WFO trophy went' to Dennis Bransford, who somehow managed to miss fallen riders while bouncing off walls, doing wheelies in the turns and going faster than even he thought he could.
