CA 90731 Final round action put the finalists in each bracket ready to charge out for the trophies, Bracket 7·B had Rob Drexler breathing a sigP of relief as his Kawie got there second to the Harley of Rich Fernandez, 15.62 to 16.08. But the H·D was a tad too quick, so Fernandez jumped out, giving the gold to Drexler. Bracket 7·A put Hourihan wheel to wheel with 'Jaws" and Hourihan must have put the fear of Honda into "jaws" with the mighty !l05, because the Hog rider red lighted, giving the Honda rail an easy win, Bracket 6 ·was a close finisher but Puckett's Ducati put Mahan's Hog away 1!l.56 to I!l.8\. Bracket 5 winner, Clark, put it to Boddie's Norton, the Honda running a I2.8!l to the Limey's 12.91. A first gear wheelie cost Bosworth the trophy in Bracket 4 as Ayers shot past him to win it 12.4!l to 12.8!l. Both riders were on Kawasakis. Bob Trussel did just about everything wrong that he could in Bracket !l Final as his Suzie red lighted, and lost fire, giving jim Hands an easy solo win. At last the big one of the day hadbeen called. Terry Henry wheeled his 150 hp, 1 I 98cc Pro Stock Kawasaki to the line. Waiting there was Wayne Holden from Shingle Springs on his AFuel, 2!l0 hp, 74 cubic inch Kawie rail monster. Neither rider had been able to solve the traction problem all day. This would be a battle of the big guys. The green light came on and Holden was out of the gate like a shot while Henry, so it seemed, was taking a nap. h appeared that Holden had it made until he (1) missed a shift, (2) lost traction. But the big horses came through at the far end and Holden stayed out in front with an E.T. of 9.10 at 159.86 mph to Henry's 9.62 at 125.70. We later found out that Henry's visor had flipped up. causing him to have to shut down sooner than he wanted. After hearing a recap of the race, Terry's comment was "we must have looked like a couple of derelicts out there." The MMA is starting a brand new thing. A drag racing division. Members will be entitled to race entry discounts. etc. The nellt MMA race will be the big two-day National meet on Sept. 22-2!l at Fremont Raceway. A guaranteed purse of 55000 plus contingencies will be up for grabs at this one. Faria flawless atealExpo By Chuck Woodbury SACRAMENTO, CA, JULY 20 Mike Faria made it look easy as he rode to victory in speedway action at Cal Expo before a modest crowd of 1,000. Mark Prince took the win in the Handicap Main after the race was prematurely halted .because of a four· rider pileup. Prince, who earned his berth in the main with a third place finish in his heat, started from the 20·yard line in the Handicap Main. Kurt Strommer pulled in behind Prince, and South Lake Tahoe's Denny Pyeatt followed in third. The trio held the positions for three laps, as Placerville's Tom Ferris tried unsuccessfully to move up from fourth place. Then, at the end of the lap, Strommer went dowR~taking Matt Jackson, Dennis Robinson and Riverside's Phil Gagnon with him. The red flag appeared immediately and Prince was awarded the win. Faria had little difficulty nailing down the Scratch Main win, topping Robinson, Pyeatt and Paul Orlandi. Faria led from start to finish in The race. By lap two he was nearly a second ahead of second place Robinson while Orlandi and Pyeatt followed. The foursome never switched positions throughout the race. Faria, with his victory, continued to increase his lead in AMA speedway points for the season. The best action of the evening came in a $75 match race between Faria and Pyeatt. Faria won by inches to coUect the bonus mon'ey. Scott Brandt won the Junior Handi· cap, but only after the race was halted due to a rider pileup. The diminutive Brandt amused the crowd later as he climbed atop a plastic milk crate to collect an impressively executed kiss from the trophy girl. Hayward's Joe Leduc won the Division Two Main after Roseville's Bill Lingley went wide at the final turn and lost the position that had been his throughout the race. In Consolation events, Mike DeLacy won the Handicap with Duane Yarrow taking the win in the Scratch race. •
