San Bernardino: New names star By Dennis Greene SAN BERNARDINO, CA, AUG. 8 Three new names go into the record book, recording their first wins of the year at San Bernardino, as the season winds down. P8u1 Belisle took a san B.rdoo win. Jim Fishback (abov.) and K.11y Moran styled at times. O.nl)is Bransford .arn.d a 0·3 win. _ John Sandon~ jumped into the early lead of the Handicap Main Event with two-time winner Dave Miller pushing hard to take over the lead. Miller gave way to the rush of Alan Christian, who came all the way from the 50-yard line to earn second place. Sandona took the checkered flag, picking up his first win at San Bernardino. The second rider to pick up his first money and trophy of the year was Division Two rider Paul Belisle, just inches ahead of Keith Larsen.' The final rider to put his name in the San Bernardino record booll was Dennis Bransford, winner of the Third Division Main. The big money race of the night, the First Division Scratch Main Eyent, went to Mike Bast and he is at the 20· win mark for the year. Crazy Christian . cashes in at Costa Mesa By Dennis Greene COSTA MESA, CA, AUG. 10 There was a lot of work for the keeper of the record book this' week. A half dozen new names found themselves standing in the winner's circle for the first time this season. Three more were added this past Friday night at Costa Mesa: Sterling Cogar took all the gold in the Division One Handicap Main Event, Mike Cross in Division Two and Dan Braviroff in Third Division. The big money race. the Scratch Main Event, again went to Alan Christian. Commentary This past week of Speedway was very laid back, with most of the super guns putting on their usual good ni!/;ht< nf racing, but without a big wmninll; effort, The record book will 1",01 I hal statement out. Just look at all th,' ""w first-time winners. It could be because they are saving themselves for the last four nights of • qualifying that stan at Ventura on Aug. 21. The racing itsclf was good. with little or no dispute over any of the rules. All the tracks were in betterthan-average shape, except 'in Sacramento where the first night of qualifying was run.
