In the Open Pro class Hopkins did it
again. Jim Lowe and his Honda four
stroker followed him in round one and
came dangerously close in the second
race when Hopkins' Suzuki busted a
clutch spring and broke a big hole in
the side of its motor. Somehow he
managed to keep his wounded
machine together to finish fint again
with Lowe, Rob Tolleson (Yam) and
Dan Paulson (Suz) following.
Craig Gormley was back to his old
self in the l25cc Pro class, piloting his
Indio Suzuki RMl25 to two wins over Jim Sendelback (Suz) and Randy
Adams (Hon).

the fint 250cc Pro moto with Chaffee
coming out on top. Marty Miller (Suz)
cruised in third while Randy
Rodriguez (Mai) switched places with
Bryan Maloney (Hon) on the last lap
for fourth.
Tim Lunde (Yam) grabbed the
holeshot in moto two. Going into the
tum at the bottom of the downhill,
though, Hadley outbrued him and
eased into a lead he didn't relinquish
the remainder of the moto.
Chaffee, who, like Hadley, had
passed up the second 500cc moto to
save it all for the second 250cc race,
started out third. He moved up to
second on lap two and was closing on
Hadley when he slid out under the
bridge on the uphill on lap three,
damaging his throttle cable enough to
drop him from the race.
Miller took his spot and held it for
the duration. Burt Wald (Hon), back
from
broken arm suffered here a
couple of months ago, had one of his
best rides to finish third, putting him
in fourth overall, Rodriguez, one slot
back, took third place bucks.
A "No Luck of the Day" award
would have tc? go to Suzuki's Bob
Elliott. While running as high as third
in the first 250cc moto, he got off
twice, the second time putting him
out.
In the fiTSt 125cc race, he flew out of
the gate and looked like a sure winner,
building upon his lead every lap. Four
laps from the checkered, though, his

was !l5 seconds ahead of Rick Johnson
(Yam). It lasted but a single lap more
before forcing him out of the race.
Following Johnson in were Lunde,
Scott Burnworth (Suz) and Rick Maki
(Yam). Burnworth had heen slowed
about mid·race with rear brake
problems.

Moto two saw Lunde out of turn one
fiTS!. That first lap proved to be a
place-swapper, though, and by its
completion, Burnworth, Don Fuller
(Suz) and Johnson had snapped up the
win, place and show spots.
Johnson got by Fuller on lap two,
but try as he might, couldn't quite
catch Burnworth. His 1-2 ftnishes still
got him the overall win, worth an
extra $50 courtesy of Escondido
Subaru.
Maki charged by Fuller late in the
race for fourth while Juan Benavidez
(Yam) came up ftfth.
