Kirschbaum (Mai) through the early
paces. Kirschbaum, having been
plagued with
bad luck and
breakdowns, recently switched to a
Maico and picked up jimmy Bester of
Dallas to keep the nuts and bolts tight
on his scooter.
While Klassen led on lap one,
Howenon and Stackable were dicing
for seventh place behind john Day and
Bob Myers (Mai). Lap three was
~irschbaum's undoing as he fell and
loaded up the Moto-X Fox Maico, rejoining the race back in 17th place.
john Day moved into third as Roger
Brown followed Klassen, and Howerton closed on Day.
A few laps later Howerton passed
Klassen for the lead, followed by Day,
Brown and Myers. While Howerton
pulled away, Myers stepped off his
bike real hard, breaking both bones of
his lower leg while in fifth place. The
first moto finishers were Howerton,
Klassen, Day, Stackable, Maby
Mcintyre and Brown.
Mark Rakestraw (Mai), Kirk
Spencer (Yam) and Monte Anderson
(Mai) ate Klassen's dust off the second
Open Expen stan while Howenon was
just back in fourth_ Dallas based
Rakestraw put pressure on Klassen
during the early laps while Howerton
came around in 12th place on lap two,
apparently after a get·off. Monte
Anderson held third as Spencer
dropped to fifth.
Kirschbaum and Howenon began
surges from ninth and. 12th
respectively with Howenon clos1Og on
the leader and overtaking him on the
lltli lap. Kirschbaum had moved up
to fifth. when the checkered flag flew
with Howenon in front, followed by
Klassen, Anderson and Rak~traw.
The "Rhinestone Cowboy" from San
Antonio earned overall honors with a
perfect 1-1 score, followed. by'K;lassen
in second (2·2), john Day m third (36), Monte Anderson in founh (7-3)
and Steve Stackable in fifth (4-7).
Kirschbaum finished sixth-overall with

Mid-westerner$
qualify for Amateur
TT National
By Dick Ainsworth
LAKE KANOPOLIS STATE PARK,
KS.JULY 22 .
The Salina Coyotes M.C. had
worked their track into excellent
condition with plenty of oil to
•
keep the dust down. The races
were very good, as usual, and the club
again deserves recognition for yet
another job well done. Today's AMA
Regional Championship came off
without a hitch.
Oklahoma's Kreg Hunt took the
lead in the 250cc fmal but Wichita's
Tim Newby zapped him quickly and
cleanly with an outside pass in a right·
hand sweeper and began to open up a
big lead. Larry Wakefield held third
up to the last lap when Scott Novotny'
got by. Newby ran away from Hunt
and had built up a 100 yard lead at the
finish.
The all· four-stroke 500c.c final
thumped off the line with Gary
Schlickau leading Bill Snyder and Todd
Ratliff while Doug Crawford and his
box stock Honda held fourth over
Kreg Hunt. On lap six Snyder closed
on Schlickau but he never got by as
Schlickau set a new one lap track
record of 40.3 erasing the old mark of
40.5, held jointly by Tim Lindfors and
Dennis Byrne. Schlickau, Snyder and
Ratliff took the top three spots and
qualified for the Amateur T.T
National to be held at Ascot Park m
Gardena, California, in August.
'Lindfors ran away with the Open
final (as expected by most) but Gary
McArthur, Mark Kumle, Ralph Lee
and Doug Crawford put on a heck of a
battle for second. "Crash" McAnhur
held them all off and Kum1e got by
Crawford for third.
Roger Schellenberger took a big
lead .in the 125cc fray and Ross
Duncan and Todd Ratliff moved up to
challen~ him for the lead. Eddie
Hillman and Mike Shown crashed but
Hillman got back into it in futh place.
On the last lap Ratliff got by Duncan
for second.
Dallas Babcock ran away from the
200cc battles while Roger Schellenberger worked his way up from futh to
pass Scott Novotny for second on the
last lap on the front chute.
