Reigning Formula 750cc world
champion
Johnny
Cecouo
(Yamaha) extended his lead in
this year's series at the Swiss
round on the Paul Ricard circuit.
France. But Cecotto was beaten home
by Swiss ace Michel FrulSChi (Yamaha)
in the first leg.
Cecotto, who injured his left arm in
a spill during practice on Saturday,
stopped in the pits at the end of the fir·
st lap to ask his mechanics to check
where some oil on his boots had come
from . .But he was waved back out into
the fray, join~ng the pack in last place.
But !:iy the end of the 32 laps, Cecotto had managed to catch everyone bar
FrulSChi, and crossed the line II
seconds down, with japanese Sadeo
Asami (Yamaha) third, only three
seconds behind him.
The hot weather and hectic pace
took their toIl on riders. Several, in·
c1uding Virginio Ferrari (Suzuki) and
American Dale Singleton (Yamaha)
crashed in both.
Cecotto made no mistake in the next
race. leading from start to finish to
win by over half a minute. But this
time FrulSChi, battling with Asami for
,second place, overshot at the chicane
and dropped back to' fourth place,
behind Asami and Frenchman Patrick
Pons (Yamaha), making up for a first
leg spill.
The weather was too hot for the
fans, too, and with temperatures
soaring into the nineties people chose
the beach instead of the race trilck.
Fewer
than
10,000
enthusiasts
bothered to tum up to watch the
event.
