Photo by PlItrick Behar. 4 I, I'm really mad nowl It staned when I was told I couldn't be a pan of·the Barstow to Vegas lrailnde in Novem· ber '78 ... vague threats by the BLM as to what they would do to stop it. We did ride, however, and it was a very pleasant day, clouded only by the 1984 tactics of the BLM Rangns hiding in bushes, taking license plate numbel'1 and pictures. Then, on May 22, 1979, we went to coun to observe the hearing of the BLM against Louis H. McKey, the Duck. It 'lias a jurisprudential farce. The judge said. "There will never again be a trail.ride ... if I have to call out the Federal Marshall, .. tbe FBI .. , or the National Guard." That made me madder yeti Then on July 14. 1979, the Duck was promised recognition at the S!,perbowl of Motocross. But the DUck was given the Superbowl runaround, He was promised many things and given nothing ... not even the promised tickets for him and his family ... I'm tired of people not getting involved and letting someone else take care of it! This man has put himself on the line for thousands of people. but they don't care enough. There have been lots of "bucks for the Duck," but do you know it costs $100 per hour for his attorney? The attorney was in coun for four entire aays for the evidential hearing and a couple of pan-days before that. The four days was entirely spent hearing the BLM present their side. That's right, folkil The Duck didn't even have his day in counl The judge said, "I want this settled outofcoun." Did he hesitate to make a aecision because of his appointment to the Court of Appeals? I think he doesn't want to find in favor of the BLM because it will martyr the Duck. But if he finds in favor of the Duck, then the decision is against the U.S. Depanment of the Interior. and we can't have that, can we? The Duck -has already been martyred because he hasn't enough financial support. The Duck said he would continue to the Supreme Court if he could. I say, let him have his dayl The system of justice the American system - will COlt in excess of $50,000. That's right, folltsl But the Duck is brokel Can we let him die? I have pledged $20 a month to the Duck's cause. But he needs hundreds ... thousands ... of people to do the same. On Thanksgiving weekend. 1979, I intend to take my children (all grown up) and my grandchildren to ride the trails between Barstow and Las Vegas. What will the Marshalls, the FBI and the National Guard do to a little old grandmother and her children - kill us? Maybe. But they can't eat us because that's against the law! Please withhold my name and address so that I may remain anonymous until Thanksgiving weekend for my memorial ride. B to V, for the Phantom Duck of the I>esen. Maybe they'll call out the CIA to find out who I am, and hopefully many others. so they can try to stop me, tool GRANDMA DUCKBACKER Wasting your money I attended the Superbowl of Motocross a~d enjoyed watching the favorite get beaten. but was shocked by the ignorance of the fans. What ignorance you ask? Ignorance about our friends in the California legislature, friends like Lt. Governor Mike Curb. .who was booed not applauded, and Assemblyman Bob Hayes, D-57 racer. Instead of wasting your money on a three dollar race program, spend your money on something wonhwhile like a $10 M.O.R.E. membership, a $10 dollar membership to join the Modified Motorcycle ~iation or possibly $12 to join the American Motorcyclist Association. Russ Sanford of M.O.R.E. and Ron Roloff of MMA are both motorcycling legislature advocates in Sacramento who need our help since both are non-profit political fighting factions. By the way, did you bear about the plan to save us from gas station lines from big brother, the U.S. Government? Their plan is this: allotments of five gallons at a time for Dear President Caner, We the undersigned, residents of , the United' States of America, motorcycle enthusiasts and sympathizers, request the removal ofJoan Claybrook as head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administratio\l. We feel tha t she has prejudicial views of motorcycles which have blinded her as to the reason why NHTS!\ exists: highway and traffic safety. Instead she has devoted her time almost entirely to anti-motorcycle campaigns and reinstituting a national belmet law. We feel that reinstituting a national helmet law is not going to reduce the number of accidents involving motorcycles, or make motorcycling any safer. Other reasons for requesting her removal are as follows: 1. She has done nothing to imple· ment a national motorcycle safety program. 2. She has done nothing to implement auto driver awareness of motorcycles. 5. She has wasted $120,000 on a ''backwards motorcycle." (D.O.T. won Sen. Proxmire's Golden Fleece of the Month Award in February.) 4. She keeps wasting tax dollars try. ing to prove how dangerous motorcycles are by compiling unnecessary accident statistics. 5. She encoura~ state governments to retain or readopt helmet laws instead of developing safety programs. Because of the current energy situation many people have become economically dependent on motorcycles. Most motorcycles get between 50 and 50 miles per gallon, while cars get only 15 to 25 mpg. Therefore, it is obvious that the number of inexperienced motorcyclists on our highways will continue to grow dramatically, and this may account for an increase in motorcycle accidents. (Another good reason why a national safety pr0gram should be implemented.) The ABATE organizations of America want our highways to be a safe place for motorcycles as well as automobiles. Unnecessary laws and regulations do not make the roads any safer. We would appreciate it if you could 190k into this matter and hope you will agree with us that Ms. Claybrook should be removed from office. Thank you for your time and careful consideration. LOREN LOMENICK ABATE of Tennessee Treasurer Chattanooga, TN Mr. Lomeniclt sent us a copy of the above letter and a petition blank to sign. Readers who agru with the ABATE oj Tennessee's viewpoint COlI support it by sending statements to th4t effect to President Carter . .. Editor.
