Mike Sullivan and Lan Trulson were the ones chasing him at fint, but Trulson got around Sullivan and started closing the gap on Brown. By lap five the pair was nose to tail, and by lap eight, Trulson was out in front on his LT Racing Triumph. Third was picked up by Eddie Wirth when Sullivan crashed, but he was involved in a battle with Frank Word and Ryan Gifford, and both manajled to get by before the checkered flag came out on the 12th lap. National 14 The National field was almost equally divided among the four brands represented: five Harley-Davidsona, four Triumphs, four Hondaa and three Yamahas. Five of the machines were 500cc singles - the four Hondas and Aksland's Yamaha. .. Rick Hocking replayed the Castle Rock "IT start, but one position better, and got the holeshot, this time over Scott Parker and Brad Hunt. Steve Eklund started about fifth, but was up to third going into the second lap. Hunt was still. having problems with his transmission popping out of third gear and was starting to drop back. At the end of five laps, Hocking Itill led over Parker, Eklund, Gary Scott, Skip Aksland, Randy Goa, Mickey Fay and Steve Morehead. On the next lap, Eklund decided to go to work, passing Parker and moving up on Hocking. On tbe next lap, through the second half of the track, Eklund palled Hocking and started to pull a lead. On the same lap, Gary Scott got 'around Parker for third and started to pressure Hocking. Goa also continued onward and upward, passing Parker on tbe next lap to bold fourth. At the end of nine laps, it was Eklund, Gary Scott, Hocking, Parker, Fay, AksIand, Morehead, Hank Scott, Hunt andJay Springsteen. On tile next lap though, Hurst and Springsteen tangled. "I came over the jump and the bike popped out of gear ...Jay came up behind me and we hooked handlebars," said Hurst after the race. Brad went down, Springer didn't but 10It time in the incident. At tbe halfway point, the ISth lap, Eklund had about a five-second margin on the battle for second, with Scott still leading Hocking, followed by Goa, Fay, Parker, Hank Scott, Aksland, Morehead, Wincewicz, Spencer, Kidd and Sprinpeen. After seven laps of following the Triumph, Hocking got back into second as Scott was fighting rear shocks that fIrSt pumped up, tben faded away altogether. "He wal getting his second wind and my bike was handli~ 10 bad 1 couldn't keep: the pace," sald Gary later. On the 20th lap, Goa let Scott up in his scope and passed him the followinglap.
