Spencer CASTLE ROCK, W A, JULY 4 A mid-summer series of TT racing in the Pacific Northwest drew nearly 200 Professional racers to the Mt. St. Helens M.e. club grounds for a celebration of the birth of the United States and some good old fashion motorcycle racing. Brad Hurst continued to dominate the racing scene with dazzling speed and agility. Hurst. mounted on a very welltUQed Jim Messler products Tnumph that was nearly all brand new for tonight, proved to be flawless ~ a ~in over Randy Goss and John WmceWlCZ riding H-D and Honda equipment respectively. Nearly 70 Junior/Pros showed up with lots of 500cc equipment a real boost for that class and an indication of what many racers see for the future. Despite that fact, Jeff Celorie took home a fine Junior win over Tom McCullough on a TT 500 and Jeff Haney on the factory XR500 Honda - Celorie rides one of those never say die Triumph twins by Chuck D",vis. In the Novice show, Scott PodergOis rode around Jimbo Filice for the red flagged win in a great display of young talent on its way up. Time trials got underway after the usual riders' meeting which included some diScussion of up and coming rule changes by Sonny Burres and Mike Kidd. Many believe that the 500's ~re on their way in and the 750's are gomg out, but the discussion is, so far, not very concrete. The base line is that all riders should be aware that changes are in the offing. If riders want to have a say, they should let it be known t~ rider rep Gary Scott or whoever else 15 interested enough in trying to keep Pro racing alive and well in this cruel world of continued inflation. Darrell Hendrickson tripped the fastest Expert time and won his heat in front of Randy Goss and Ri'ck Hocking. Hurst took the' second heat from the pole for a win over Mickey Fay and Mike Kidd. John Wincewicz rode an exceptional third heat on an XR 500 over Gary Davis and new daddy, Randy Scott. The format at Castle Rock al10ws for lots of heats Frank' Word took the fourth over Bernie 'Larson and Don Dodge took the final heat over a hard-charging Randy Skiver. Jeff McDaniel combined a healthy body and motorcycle to set fast Junior time (for a record) and won the first heat over Honda mounted Ray Dugan, who sold his XR 750 the same night. Jeff Colorie rode the Ray's Trucking/Stereo Super Stores Triumph to the fastest Junior heat win with Duane Cruml.ey, regional point leader Tom McCullough, Texan Bubba Shobert, Erick Swanson and Jeff Haney riding the bac~ up Jerry Griffith tuned XR 500, toppmg off the next five heats. In the eight Novice heats, Brian Haycock set the fastest time over Scott Podergois and Jim Filice. Podergois took off with the Trophy Dash after Jimbo Filice tried. a DT II and slid wide. JeffCelorie took the Junior Dash and Hurst set the stage for the Expert main. . Jim Filice dialed into the first comer on his Champion framed, ND sparked YZ 250, and led for the most part, but a fine job by Scott Podergois stole the show. Jimbo was having some trouble with his lines through the infield and Podergois reeled him in through the· sweeper with a style he obviously learned at Ascot while becoming top Novice. The Yamaha of Visalia rider is also very much in the hunt for the Western Regional Novice point run along with Brian Haycock who took third over Denny Camp and Randy Patterson. . Jeff Celorie took a fa;rly easy Ju~ior win, holding off the hard·chargtng efforts of Tom McCullough and Jeff Haney. The 5OO's couldn't hold the pace and Celorie was a very exuberant winner. As the Experts lined up for the fmal, Hurst was asked about being the only rider in the main with a DT II. His reply was that the tire "works just about anywhere," but the cut was quite radical and obviously done with some thought. John Wincewicz, on the XR .500 Honda, was on the pole but Hurst got through the first tum q';1ickest and didn't even bother to look around for the rest of the trip. Randy Goss rode a very consistent second place race after passing Wincewicz at the halfway mark. John likes his XR 500 but wi~es it was a 750 in the straights. But he hung on for a fine third over Mickey Fay's Triumph and the Darrell Hendrickson Norton. Don Dodge and Randy Scott kept up a race long battle for sixth and seventh along with Gary Davis and Randy Skiver. Results EX MAIN: 1. lIted Hurst ITril; 2. Riwldy Goa (H-D); 3.
