For beginners: Style and fashion
.IMotorcycle riding," it has been
Sllid, "is the most fun you can
have with clothes on." This is a
truth spoken in jest. Bike cloth-
ing styltS have evol~ out of the need
for protect.ion. trimness, and utility. If
zippered leather suits are not your
style, wear ·some combination of
jacket, long pants and sturdy shoes
Whenever you ride, even as a
pauenger.
.
"on top of that, buy the btSt, most
comfortable "crash" helmet you can
afford and. as they say in the credit
card commercial, "Don't leave home
. without it."
It is too bad we think of them as
"crash helmets," when a helmet does
so many !>ther jobs for the bill,er.
They're the btSt thing ever invented
for keeping one's ears warm, holding a
lace shield, hushing distracting noises
and securing one's hair in place. They
are also nice to have on in case one
does crash, not that you ever will, of
course.
Same thing with pants and jackets.
boots and glovtS - they keep you from
getting cold or sunburned and also
ward off the dread road rash. But we
aan't call them "crash pants." or
"crash glovtS."
Some oldtime bikers even go so far
as to say. "DrtSs for the crash, not for
the ride." But I think that if you are
dressed for Fhe ride. complete with
helmet, you-'ll be drtSSed for whever
e'tentuates.

Onite. plan. survive
Motorcycling is a sport, a convenience, a necessity and even a
lifestyle that occupies much of
our time, thought, and energy
as motorcyclists. Clouds hang low over
our future and riders around the
country are starting to organize,
though loosely, to make their feelings
heard.
.
But before we organize too strongly
and entrench our dtSirtS too firmly, I
feel it is neetSsary to tStablish what our
,oals in political action should be. I
submit that yoe as public-minded
motorcyclists have our priorititS seriously misplaced_
_
Presently. we are expending great
a,tounts of money and time fighting
belmet laws and noise standards. I feel
we are charging after quixotic
wmdmiIls in the face of impending
doom.
Firsl we should establish what our
1\8mber one danger is as motorcyclists.
l:. is not wearing helmets or how much
lIoise our motorcycles make, it is
-,ther the whole existence of
IIIOtorcycles themselves. I feel that the
~ctions we take in the next couple of
ears will directly determine if we even
ve motorcycltS to ride in the next
ecade.
