Jeff Haney continued his winning ways on the factory Honda while Scott Podergois came back from problems at Clackamas to win big over Dan Atkinson and Ben Zakarian. With S!l500 up for grabs, exclusively for Novices and Juniors, the competition was at ilS fiercest. Some heavy hitters came to town early: Men Lawwill brought the Skip Aksland TT 500 for Tom McCullough to try and Dennis McKay and BiU Bell from the Honda camp were on hand to help with the Haney/Griffith operation. . Nine qualifying healS reduced the size of the Novice race crew and Junior time trials put Haney on the pole for the first heat with a half second faster time than the rest. Haney ran off with his heat win as did McCullough for the classic main evenl confrontation while Ray Dugan and Dave Ryan made it a sizzler for the 500cc competitors by winning the other heats. In regulation Novice heat action, Scott Podergois beat out Ben Zakarian when Ben bobbled in the righl hander; Dan Atkinson, Chris Fitzhugh and Kevin Hugill were all smiles after winning their heats. In the Ju~ior trophy dash Terry Weigand won over Haney, despile a late charge by the Honda rider and Weigand having a battery go dead. Atkinson won the Novice dash with Podergois pulling off the track. Fitzhugh and Hugill made up the other members of Ihe Novice dash. Trophy races were instituled wilh the set program and Bob Barney won the Novice portion on a nearly stock KX 250 with Brett Barkman passing strong for second over Darrell Brunner and brother Jeff Barney in for fourth. Brian Thompson found the right combination for his Hayward Yamaha TT 500 just one race too late, winning the trophy main for Juniors over Brian Johnston, Bob Moran and Craig Scroggins. The classic Junior confrontation this year seems to be Tom McCullough on the Rob Mussey TT500 with some factory assistance, and XR 500 Honda factory rider Jeff Haney on the Jerry Griffith tuned scoot. The pair lined up right next to each other for the 15 laps and with the green, Haney was gone while McCullough missed about three shifts that set off the fil'C'WOrks. At' least two riders ricocheted off his KR TT 500. causing other riders to collide; Keith Day and Steve Monger wound up on the ground with Day getting two sets of wheels trying 10 push him deeper into the din. His gas tank was destroyed, allowing for turn one spectators to have a weeny roast after they cleared away the debris, including both bikes, which looked more like carcasses than scooters. On the restan, Haney once again got the holesbot. McCullough tried to keep pace but was beset with some handling woes and settled in for second. Rich Hayman came out of the semi to do a fine job of picking through the disabled to take third over the Ray's Truckin'/Chuck Davis-tuned Triumph of Jeff Celorie. The D &: S Enterprise/Torco Oil/Benders Refrig. Triumph of Jeff McDaniel was stiU healthy, but Ray Dugan was seen with the Honda team after the race looking for spare clutch parts as his XR 500 Honda of Arcata, running very well in the early laps, fell to sixth. Rocky Robinson rode the Custom Equipment Co. Triumph to a fine seventh despite no brakes while the rest of the crew DNF. Scott Podergois made up for his Sidewinders Regional problems by coming down hOI and heavy on all the Novices. Riding well on the Porterville Helicopter Service sponsored Visalia Yamaha, he won his qualifying heal, regular heat and main, only losing in the dash with chain problems. Dan Atkinson and Ben Zakarian were his only nemesis and he dispatched them even when Atkinson put it move on him. Young Dan took the Carl's Cycle KX 250 to a qualifying heat second, his regular heat win, the dash win and second overall over Zakarian, who didn't want to run because of recurring right hand tum difficulties Ihat nearly highsided him more than once. Taking third was not a thing he really likes, but it's guaranteed that the development process for his Champion/Zakarian Kawasaki will continue. Results' JR MAIN: 1. Jeff Haney (Honl; 2.
