The capper of the night was john Connolly's win in the Division Three Handicap Main Event. It was earlier in Division Three when Ed Thurman tried to top Bobby Hill's record of knocking down the crash wall. Thurman was very lucky to walk away after going full on into the wall, which only sustained 'minor damage, unlike his bike, which was somewhat shorter than the rest with a new style?f bars. There was no Costa Mesa because of the Orange County fair, but we'll all be back this Friday night, the 27th. Ascot worked overtime making the best racing surface ever for Speedway, and that's right from the riden. No dust and no wet spots. The riden responded to the good surface with some very close racing and not one lay· down or crash all night. Mike Bast made it a perfect week by winning the Scratch Main Event, his third in as many nights. Our visitor from New Zealand, Tony Briggs, ran second to Mike. Picking up his fint Handicap Main Event of the season in First Division. Mike Bloom led the way, with Briggs again earning second. Tom Hughes, new to Speedway this year, got the gold in Division Two. . The whole night'S commentary, and the whole week of speedway was on a much higher level this week, with the ijders and promoters knocking down one or two of the walls between them, trying to bring the spor! back to a high entertainment value, bringing out some things that were only bitched about in the dark. Politics don't work In government, so why try them in sports? The very word sports, to most, means fun. Speedway is a job. Work for the riders. work for the promoten. work for the offtcials and work for me. I love my job. Working together at a job you like gives an end result of time well·spent and a show that people like to tel1their friends about and bring them along the next week to see what they're raving about. You can come out four nights a week for fun (sport), starting on Tuesday nights at Ventura at the fairgrounds right on the beach. On Wednesday nights at the Orange Show Fairgrounds, Thursday night in the city of Gardena at Ascot, and Friday at the fairgrounds in Costa Mesa. • Mall to: , P.D.Q.
