Talked with Jay the day after Castle Rock and he was saying that only a muscle in his left arm was hurting and he would be ready to again go after EltIund in what has now become an annual late season charge. EltIund has won every National TT except Castle Rock and Ascot and will be tough to beal. He has a point run on Springsteen but never quite seems to get far enough in front to make it . look secure. A big. win at Ascot for Steve and another night of hard luck for Jay would just about give him that first-ever cushion in the standings. Alex "Jorgy" Jorgensen will be back for his first National event since getting hurt at Houston in February. Jorgy won Ascot last year and has been running a few non-money fun events in the Stockton area oflate. Hank Scott says it may be true that Jorgy has the oldest machine entered in the Ascot race (the BSA twin) but he surely has the second oldest with some of the parts on his Triumph dating back to 19651 This puts brother Gary on the third oldest in the line·up. but on the same bike that has won the event numerous times in the past. With the coming of the TT at Ascot it also means the night· before Friday "Gardena Gold Cup" half mile for Novice. Junior and Expert riders. It's the last half mile before the fmal National oval race at Ascot the end of September. So once again it is the only time of the year when fans can take in a half mile and a TT at the same track within 24 hours. A side note in TT happenings: The night after the Castle Rock National they ran the annual Regional TT at the Sidewinders track in Portland. Yes, Brad Burst was the guy to beat. Brad put his Triumph on the pole for the 25 lap final and led all the way - to the final five yards. Then Randy Scott caught, passed, and won by two feet! It happened that Hurst looked over the wrong shoulder, but a flTst and a second was still the largest twin payoff for the rider that has become the newest AMA National winner. You can expect to see several 500.cc singles at Ascot. Hocking looked good on his at Castle Rock; rookie John Wincewicz looked equally good. A(.!other 500cc was on the pole in the National final up north but the young man riding it was shoTt on wheel to wheel experience. But a 500cc still, for the record, was the fastest in the heat races. Ascot is longer and faster and it will be the ultimate test for the smaller one· piston machines that may be taking over the racing season soon.
