DIRT'
's crash brought out the. red flag.
Kenny Robicheaux got right with
program,
passing
Brian
. the
Thompson's TT500 for a fine win
in front of his hometown crowd.
Thompson's single turned 27.2 for
second fast qualifier at about a half
second behind Day. Comments from
riders were that the restrictors make
the bigger twins feel sluggish ·off the .
turns but, with turns in the shape they
were., you didn't want that beserko two
wheeling hp, just nice smooth throttle
control. Arlette Smith rode the H·D
West scoot to a fine third over Dorothy
Rowe while Dave Ryane and Steve
Polson were seen wandering off to
regroup for the main.
Gary Scott disposed of the trophy
dash in relatively quick. time, not even
stopping for much of a presentation as
the day grew long and the riders grew
restless.
The green and white Keith Day
NDspark.ed H·D was not to be
challenged in the Junior main. Rich
VQlk did some fine passing to garner
second in front of Ken Robicheaux
who was trying different lines that just
weren't to be used,. The red flag came
out with three laps left when Arlette
Smith found Steve Polson all over the
track and decided that she didn't want
any part of either him or his bike. She
threw the Harley away, bending it a
bit, but luckily didn't hurt herself.
Polson must have been having
troubles: On the prior lap, he pulled a
stuff job on Dorothy Rowe gomg into
the first comer that nearly.put the San
Diego blonde into the fence.
Just about the time the Experts were
about to start their own race, referee
Walt Masterson came out of the office
signaling all was go. A clean start was
all G. Scott needed and it was a ho·
hum affair of follow the leader. Skip
Aksland had broken the gear box on
his Mert Lawwill tuned machine and
alternate John Hately moved 'into the
lineup witli not too much enthusiasm.
Mike Minnig kept up a real smooth
pace for second while Kidd and
Hocking appeared to be having a good
battle for third along with Pearson
and Robinson. Past' the half-way
mark, Hank Scott parked the NoTton
in tum three and signaled to older
brother that it was a biggee. Eklund
began to make some interesting moves
and was passing through the pack,
perhaps remem~ng how big the
une was. He finished sixth, just in
fOnt of the Cycle Engineering H-D of
Budw~r sponsored Bud Robinson
with Tom Berry beating Wayne
Rainey and Burres.
