San Berdoo stadIum AtX debut By Tom Corley SAN BERNARDINO, CA,JULY 6 Motocross fans are thrilled because DOW true stadium motoCross racing is a weekly hap.~ningl Continental Moto-sports Club, in 26 conjunction with American Raceways, Inc., is malting it pouible because last Friday they fired off the inaugural AlIPro raq at the Orange. Show Fairgrounds. For years the big-daddy Superbowl of Motocross had been a SoCal sensation, and many' have thought that a weeltly spectacular would be just as popular. Well, tonight was the test and what a suc€essI The stadium was over three-quarters full and people were everywhere. The Pro turnout was just as good with many 125, 250 and 500cc Pi"06 on hand to go for the $3000 purse. The finals began with the 125cc Pro class and in this race we -again sa'!' what a hotshot rider Gary Denton is. Denton is known for his fantastic holeshot starts and we saw him do this triclt in die first moto of the 125cc Pros. Once he'd hooked the lead, he had the entire race wired and kept his LOP Yamaha ·in front of Scott Burnworth and Mike Tripes. An even better display of racing was seen in the second moto. This time Denton did it again and zipped out ahead in fint place. He had to give it a 100% effort though, because Honda factory rider Jim Gibson was hounding him. Jim alm06t passed Gary while hauling over a jump, but had to settle for second place. The overall 125cc Pro order was Denton, Burnworth, 'Tripes, Jim Holley, John O'Mara, Todd Peterson, Mike Brown, Craig .DaIe, Jim Gibson and Craig Gormley. In the fint moto of the 250cc Pro . finals, Gary Denton shot out ahead and proved that he can be faster on any size bike. Kolbe Cycle's Donnie lJansen really hot-footed it on his Can-Am as he chased Gary desperately. Later Denton l06t the lead and stopped while Hansen and Gibson . advanced for the top places. The starting bend was hard to get by without bumping elbows and Jeff Jennings and Donnie Hansen found this out in the second moto when they both hit the ground_ On the winning side, Ron Turner of Luft was having a total battle with Jim Gibson, but prevailed while Gary Denton was strutting from third. When it came payoff time, Gibson collected the fint place bucks over Denton,' Turner: Hansen,_Dave Gerig. Burt Wald, Chris Chaffee, Mike Tripes, Raymer and Arden Hadley. In the first moto of the 500cc Pro race, Ron Turner was the man on the move. Ron won with no real problem while Dave Williams on his Maico hung in second ahead of Arden Hadley and JeffJennings. • In the last" race of the night the 500cc Pro class had i~ last round and was led by Dave Williams. Turner got l06t in the flags or some place while Williams scored over Hal Strauss and ,Donnie Hansen. Williams took home the bacon over Strauss, Hansen, Mike Tripes, Ron Turner, Arden Hadley, Scott Cavness, Jim Fishback, Mark Brooks and JeffJennings. The official word is that the CMC will run a full-scale program from mini to maxi every Fri!iay night here at the Orange Show Fairgrounds. Every fourth week of the month they will be putting up a $!l000 purse for the Pr06 so a special crowd will always be on hand for that. Results 125 PRO: 1. Gory Deman IV....I; 2. Sc:oll ~ CSuzl; 3.
