Moran main man at Berdoo By Dennis Greene SAN BERNARDINO. JULY. 4 Fourth of July fireworks set the sky ablaze with holiday cheer, but the real action was on the track where 17 ·year-old Deve Miller lIeftl won the Division Two qUIIllfylng race at Costa M.a. to become eligible for DIvision One. IAbovel Frank Forsyth tumbles in a crash that tore off a front wheel.18elow1 Dave Simslleftland Moose Kennedy, Costa M... winners. Shawn Moran, on a new four-val~ jawa supplied by Collins Automotive. outrode Dave Sims, jim Fishback and Gene Woods in the Scratch Main Event. Moran has been nicknamed "The Miracleworker" because he has won so many events coming from last place, but was not the case at San Bernardino: He was in a four-way run for first place all the way; four abreast in every turn with Sims and Moran pulling away on the straightaways just slightly. Moran won .with·Sims taking second place. Sims also took second place in the Handicap Main just behind Mark Marriott. This was Mark's third win in First Division. His victory came from the .ten·yard-line, but he showed a lot of style and good rac~ iense. The Frog House. What's that, you ask? It's a surfboard shop in Newpon Beach that has footed the bill for :;hane Hawley the past two seasons and they finally have something to jump about. Shane finally won a Main Event after running up a list of ~conds and thirds that could choke a horse. He went all the way to the winners' circle in the Division Two Handicap Main Event. A rose by any other name, and all that, won the Division Three Main Event. There are two Rose brothers, Dave and Dennis. and as yet we at C,cle New$ have not given the right rider credit for his win. or put the right name under the picture, but here's hoping! Btiggs and Faas fastest at Ascot By Dennis Greene GARDENA, CA,JULY 5 22 Just a sat in after wall, few weeks ago Leni Faas the ambulance at Ascot, bouncing off the crash wonderiof{ if it was all wonh it. This past Thursday night, in front of the biggest crowd 'of the season, he won the Handicap Main Event. Mike Peddicord was the early leader of that race, setting a very fast pace. Shawn Moran and Faas both staned at the back of the pack on the SO-yardline, and as they worked their way through traffic, picked the right trail to victory. Mike Bast, who did not race, sat in the announcer's booth with Bruce Flanders tallr.ing about the races. Mike was taking a few days off while all his equipment was being re·wOl;ked for the second half of the season. Bast put up extra money out of his own pocket to the winner of the Scratch Main Event, who he will race against next week in the Feature Match Race. Again, he will put up the bucks, winner take all. Tony Briggs won the Scratch Main over Frank Adamo, Shawn Moran and Brad Oxley. So it will be Briggs against Bast in next week's Match Race. If you've ever wondered why our riders have to work so hard to win overseas on the big European tracks, you can get a good idea when you see Briggs on the big oval at Ascot. Besides goi ng fast as hell, he never seems to back off and rides smooth as glass. Moose Kennedy made up for last week's loss in the Division Two Main Event by running away with the Main. Sims sharp at shaky Costa Mesa By Dennis Greene COSTA MESA. JULY 6 I can't use the same words the riders are using to let out their frustrations on the way'the rules are being interpreted, but the saying, "justice is blind" is true. Case in point: one rider banged into two different riders in two laps. The first rider he hit ran into the crash wall taking another rider with him. The red flag came out, stopping the race. but the rider who set up the crash kept on racing, and Imoc\.ted off yet another rider. According to the rules, or at least the rules that were used last week, if you knock someone off, yooTe disqualified. But, that .was not the cue this time. In fact, since
