Three riders scored career chull firsu in the oprning program: Mike Monsegur in the 125cc Juniors, Peter Sampo in the 250cc Intermediates and Jessie Santiago in the 500cc Intermediates. Sampo's was the easiest as he went two for two over Jess Hammond who was malting his first night start of the year. Monsegur's was the wildest as the ex-Mini rider had to come back in the second moto to come from behind for a 2 -I victory after looking to be on the losing end of a tie-breaker with Manny Leon until the last hundred yards when Leon slid down and let Monsegur home free. Leon got going quickly, however, and salvaged the runner-up spot with a 3-3 fmish dfon: Rounding: out a fine evening of racing were the Junior Minis, where, with school out, a goodly crop of youngsters were on hand, and 10 year old Frankie Brundage not only blasted 'em for his fourth win of the year, but also showed his exhaust pipr to several of the Intermediates running in the combined event. CMCOCIRMX: SImmons smokes By Tom Corley IRVINE, CA,jUNE 15 Now that the weather is getting burning hot, more and more Todd Peterson placed '-2 after two classes of racing at CMC OCIR. people wiD be heading out to the nighttime motocross tracks. It apprared as if the trend is staning at OCIR and tonight a few more faces staned to show up_ Todd Simmons is very consistent in nighttime racing. and races in the 250cc Intermediate class at Ascot, here at PCIR and at Saddleback. Often he is in the top three positions, but usually geu blocked off by somebody who wants that first place spot just as bad as he does. Well this time he attained his first place goal and became this evening's 250cc Intermediate winner. Simmons blew the pack away in each moto and managed to hussle the first wave of the checkered flag in each moto. Ron Kain trailed Simmons in the first moto for the whole time and in the second moto he was right after Steve Rawding who squeezed into the second place position. Overall it was Simmons, Kain. Brice Worden, and Rick Nielsen. A constant battle was seen this evening between Todd Peterson and visiting Chappy Blose who is from Phoenix, AZ. Chappy had his best event in the 125cc Pro race with two firsts, while Peterson was second with a Suzuki that apprared to be slowing down. Peterson got back at him though in the 250cc Pro class on his trustworthy Honda. Todd claimed two firsts and this time Blose's Kawasaki quit running so he had to push his machine back. Because of this Juan Benavidez was second overall while Vince Van Hook was third on a new Kawasaki. Results MINI JR: 1. Gory Ybarro tKowl; 2. 1132; 3. 0 - , PororlOlT IVoml. . MINIINT: 1. Hames hot at Corona ST/HM By Elaine Jones Photo by Dan Mahonyl W'lZ8r~ Racing Photography CORONA, CA,jUNE 14 It was the first night of the sum- mer flat track season and the Pros were out in force. Pete Hames hasn't forgotten his way around the Corona ovals and proved it in quick order but .he had his hands full with Ross Klatt and Tommy Walton. Klatt will take delivery on a new Yamaha and the Premier Yamaha-sponsored rider has thrown out the challenge to Hames - he is looking to dethrone him. In the short track 250cc Money main it was the Harry D. Foster Yamaha of Tommy Walton breaking out on top with Klatt second, Ben Meyer third an,d Hames founh. By the second lap Hames picked off Meyer while Klatt had moved by Walton to take over the lead. The three ran handlebar to handlebar fot the next lap and then Walton zigged when he should have zagged and w~nt from second to last in the bat of an eye. Hames was now second and breathing on Klatt's exhaust pipr. Hames found his oprning on the next lap and the lead was his. From that point on it was clear sailing for the "Semi Flash." Klatt was a solid second with Meyers tilird and Walton a ble to move bad up tofounh. The 250cc Money half mile saw the same cast of players on the line for a rematch. This time Hames went directly to the front of the pack and stayed there. Klatt was second with Walton third. Though their positions never changed it wasn't for lack of trying as Walton was on him all the way until the last few laps when slower riders being past got in the way. Danny Perkins was in full control of the Open Money half mile as he went wire to wire for the win. Rob Selvy got in trouble at the drop of the flag and instead of going straight kissed the
