Passing up Mammoth to get used to
riding Yamahas again, Chris Chaffee
bolted into the lead at the start of the
first 500cc Pro moto and established a
short lead right away.
.
Sorting things out behind him that
fint lap were Clint Hardick (Mai),
Alan Smith (Hus), Lee Ramage (Mai)
and Dale Anderson (Mai), who
dropped out on lap fIVe with
transmission gremlins.
Smith kept Hardick worried until he
fmally went by at the bottom of the
downhill on lap four. He set his sights
on Chaffee at that point and by the
time they exited Rattlesnake Gulch on
the next lap, Smith was in front. He
went on to take the checkered with a
very comfortable lead.
Chaffee finished second while
Ramage held off Chip Howell (HOI)
for third.
Scott Porter (Yam) led the first lap
of moto two with Smith, Howell and
the rest of tbe gang putting t.he
pressure on from behind. Smith put
his bike into the lead on the downhill;
but shortly after that, both Husky
riders went down, Smith gettin~ up
and. away after the pack had seemmgly
vanished.
Porter had his problems too. His
bars loosened and lowered themselves
over the jumps, making control
difficult to maintain. A ditch proved
to be his undoing, allowing Ramage
his shot at the lead, which be kept
until Chaffee bounced past him on the
upbil1 on lap three.
Cotning up quickiy, tbough, was
Howell who had moved into third by
lap six. Coming out of the back section
at the end of lap seven, he was into the
lead for good.
Smith also came on strongly, though
he could only get up to fourth behind
It was good enough for third
averal, though, with Chaffee getting
tbe win and Howell second.'
Tony Wanket (Yam), who had
driven back from Mammoth to try and
get points today, outdragged tbe rest
of the 2SOcc Pros to the first tum.
Before long. however. Chaffee took
. over and CNised to the win. Scott

Johnson (Hon) and Jerry Raymer
(Yamrrounded out the first four.
The second moto combined the
25O's and all five uSec Pros whose
flJ'St moto was won by Scott BIl~worth
(Suz). Bob~y Sullivan and Don Fuller,
also Suzuki·mounted, were the only
survivors of their first moto.
Wanket got the holeshot again, but
kept his lead intact all the way.
Chaffee settled for second while the
next bike in was Burnworth who had
made up the deficit between the 250's
and 125's in less than four laps.
Johnson, Raymer and Bryan
Maloney on his new Honda were the
next quarter· liter bikes in. Fuller
became the seCond 125cc to get the
flag, though Sullivan was reeling him
in during the last few laps.
Starting next week, there will be
CMC-sanctioned races here on the first
and third Sundays' of the month in
addition to the Saddleback events on
those days. Included will be classes
from Beginner to Expert. Pros may
ride Expert, but there wil1' be no
money payback.

California Raciolt Club made
Mark Adamson took the day's top
honors. Miles Adamson rode his son's
250 Maico in a special father's race
and, winning the contest, returned the
bike to watch his son, Mark, snap up
both 2S0cc Intermediate motOl for his
own trophy. Phil Wells rode his son's
. 2SO Honda in the father's race to finish
second, and although his son Glen
finished second in the first 250cc Inter. mediate moto behind Adamson, Glen
DNF the second moto which upset
their chance at a father·son pair of
second place' trophies.
Action in the 12Sec Pros saw a close
first race when Richard Barron and
Ken Ehlers met in a full on
challenging match. Ehlers and Barron
are close friends and the WilY they rode
together, which was way out front of
the pack, they may well have been
practicing the buddy system. Ehlers
got the holeshot and stayed in
command of the front through the
moto but Barron was right there all
the way and put the pressure on Ehlers
right up to the checkered flag. When
the pair went at it in the second go
'round Ehlers got t~ holeshot again
but this time' Barron aced him out on
the third lap and played it out to win.
Barron went home the overall victor
with Ehlers finishing second for the
day.
.
David Behlings started back to the
rear of the pack in both 250cc Pro
motos . but managed to jam his
Yamaha into the front before the end
of each race to become the overall
winner. Starting in front of Behlings
both races were Chris FISher and Ken
Ehlers, who finished second and third
each time. After Behlings shot into the
lead, FISher held second all the way
except in the second moto when Ehlers
passed him and beld the position for
two laps. But FISher was able to regain
his spot where be fmished 2-2 with
Eblers going !l.!! for third overall.
Simi Valley Maico·sponsored Rich
Bland went holeshot to fmish in both
Open Pro motOl to finish first overall
in that class. Separated by a few
lapped riders, Mike Said followed
Bland home to complete his day as
second overall and AI Stinebaugh
finished third.
