JUNE 22 With several months of bad luck. and second places behind him, Redlands Suzuki's Danny Burtt returned to the winner's circle at 36 Corona Raceway after a dOle race with Rick Stout in the 125cc Pro class. In the fint moto. Bunt put himxH into an early lead. but Stout's DG Suzuki was right on his tail. While the two of them pulled away. third place was still up for grabs with several riders in contention. Roben Green of Anaheim Suzuki. Don Griewe (Hon). Greg Zitterkopf '(Suz) and Keith. Williamson (Suz) were all within a few feet of one another as they bumped and juggled for any kind of advantaF. At the end of lap one. however. it was Green not so securely on top with Griewe pushing bard. It wam't un.til the fifth lap that anything changed with Griewe finally moving into third past a fading Green. who was also passed a shon time 'Iater by Chris Swank (Kaw). Meanwhile. back on top. the batde was as fierce as ever with Burtt still holding off a determined Stout. Stout's job was suddenly made easier when Burn crashed one lap before die white flag. but then he almost gave the lead back to the remounted Bunt when he ran off the track two turns later. But Stout was still on top at the fiQish with Burtt second and Griewe third. The stan of the next round was a reversal of the first with Stout getting the lead in the first tum and Bunt .playing catcb up. Once again it was a two way race with third place being decided in a srparate battle several seconds behind. Griewe took the spot much earlier this moto, but he was still under pressure aU the way to the end frotn Swank. Up front. Stout and Burtt kept at it until Bunt took the lead on the same lap that he bad lost it in the first round. "I only made one mistake that race, and Burtt nailed me." Stout commented later. "but it was a good race." An interesting highlight of the night's racing was a shootout between the Malcolm Smith retail store slaff and the warehouse staff. Both motos were runaway battles between retail's Wayne Martin (Hus) and warehouse's Kenny Jones (Sul.). Jones crasbed in round one. taking third behind Martin arid Vinnie DiPadova. who was doing quite well considering he was on a RM125 while almost all the rest of the pack rode Open classen. In the next moto. Jones came back for the win with Manin and DiPadova following. but overall it was still Manin. Jones and DiPadova. Results n:omI: MIN BEG: 1. Phil Smith lSuzl; 2. John Gorjoo 3. Gormley takes DeAnzaMX By Ron Lawson SUNNYMEAD. CA. JUNE 24 Hullett Distributing made their presence known at the DeAnza Cycle' Park Racing Club's motocross last Sunday by giving away miscellaneous motorcycle accessories to some of the finishers. Chest protectors. grips and tires were randomly distributed to the crowd of eager MXers. making the day· profitable for lhe sportsmen as well as the Pros. In the 125cc Experl class. lhe rider thar came o~t on top of a close. hard fought race was Indio Suzuki's Craig Gormley (Suz). He rook the lead early in the lirst moto, but DC's Rick Stout (Suz) and Barnes Yamaha's Mark Barnes were botb right on his tail. Gormley eventually built up a small cushion while Stout and Barnes traded places several rimes. but as soon as Stout bad established himself firmly in second. he reeled in the leader considerably. At the finish. however. it was still Gormley. Stout and Barnes ahead of Bill Pelto (Suz) and Keitb Williamson (Suz). Moto two staned in much die same way. with Gormley in front PUl'Slled by Stout and Barnes. But tbis time Barnes fell on the second lap. leaving third place up for grabs ~n Pelto and Williamson. Williamson was lhe one to come out ahead of that battle. bur he was still a long way behind Stout and Gormley who were closer to each otber tban ever. Gormley beld a narrow edF until the fifth lap when Stout knifed through the inside of a tum. cleanly talting the lead. Gormley was still in tbe race. though. and his constant pressure begll11 to take its toll on the leader by tbe pimh lap. Stout was getting into lapped traffic by tbat time-and he was trying to waste as little time as possible in passing the slower riders. It got a little hairy a couple of times and then he finally got tangled up with one of them and went down. Gormley narrowly avoided the crash himself. but went on to win tbe race with Williamson second and Stout third. Overall it was Gonnley. Stout. Williamson. Pelto. Greg Zitterkopf and Bames. The 250cc Intermediate claSli was complex. but it saw Danny Cannon (Mai) take an overdue first overall. The first round saw first· time Intermediate Pat Taylor (Hon) take the win ahead of Cannon and Mark Branch (Suz). but in round two. Taylor fell and Cannon took an easy win. Totaled. it went Cannon. Taylor and Branch. Results PEE WEE: 1. Alan _ lSuzl; 2. KimbotIy _lSuzl. PEE WEE: 1. John AIIDn CHon); 2. JoIl Ponorjan lHan). MINI BEG: 1. Jimmy _ IV....); 2. Miko Thampoan I~; 3.
