GARDENA, CA, JUNE 20 The Ascot motocross track has undergone several radical change, For those who haven't come out lately. right before the famous IT jump tbey have just added two new straightaways and hairpin turns. This has made the race more interest· ing. especially for the grandstand s~tators since they get to see the nden funnel through this section and many times the riders crash and bum together. This Wednesday's program was shon .and sensational, just the way a night race should be. The first race of tbe event began with the combined Mini/IOOcc class. Duane Summers raced his Yamaha in the Mini Junior class. He gives a lot of credit to his very helpful sponsor, Premier Yamaha. In this event he dusted off the other small riders and captured first pl,ilce in each moto. Suzuki· mounted Michael Buchanan wasn't able to follow Summers very well but he was capable of leaving the rest of the class behind. Dan Carpenter (Suz) was third over R..y Montoya (Suz), Tim Rutherford (Kaw). Ray Romero (Yam), Newton Acevedo (Suz) and Randy Sialana. The- 250cc Intermediate class was won by Shawn Mahn (<:·A) and he whipped the pack in the same manner as did little Summers. DMG shop rider Mike Foley had a ,onsistent score and took third in each moto which gave him the second place trophy. Randy . Rogers (Yam) is always in the top three and he just made it this time with a third place finish. Daryl Hance (Suz) was founh over Darrell Ritchey (Amx) who just made a rather quick recovery after receiving several stitiches from last week's crashing. Results MINI JR: 1. 0 . - S....-. IVom!; 2. Because of the wind flies, one must do a good job of watering the track. ~ell tonight the water truck man seemed to be a little bit too generous and he showered the course with more than an adequate share of water. This did not create any problem though, because they just used the bikes to cling up some of the mud. The riders had a blast doing this and they were allowed an additional balf·hour or so of practice. C.J. Wenner is one rider that is becoming more noticeable all of the time. He has been making a good impression by destroying the 250cc Junior class. You can't do better than taking two first place wins and that is exactly what Wenner accomplished. I should add though tbat Wenner has been known to get a little radical at times. Once he flew over the jump which is directly in front of the gt:andstands and he- nearly clobbered me as I attempted to click a sensatiQnal photo. Instead he just roosted on my reponer's clipboard with his back tire and slung it into the brush. Oh well, there go the official Ascot results! Anyway, Wenner put on a fine show and took home the 250cc Junior victory witb him. Tbe finest turnouts are usually not seen in the Mini classes but tonight there was a definite improvemenL The first two races consisted of the Mini classes and there were quite a few of these little riders. In the 50cc class there were eight hot riders and in the 80cc class there was even more with 14. Chris Sparks is one of tbe winningeat riders in OCIR action and he does in the 80cc competition on a Kawasaki. He usually lacks some good racing action because the others are too far behind. This time the situation changed a bit as visiting rider Dean Peterson was on band. Dean was the quickest at the start and succesllfully out-distanced everyone in the first mota. Sparks gritted his teeth from behind and had to accept second place over Pete Loncarevich (Yam). A lot of excitement was seen in the second moto of racing as Peterson jumped out ahead again. Dean led for a brief while and then swooped around a comer, right by where I was standing. and he bit the ground. He was able to lire it up again but by that time the (Ctmtirnud to f1o.ge 16)
