Gene Woods became the fourth rider to put it all together this past Wednesday night at the Oran~ Show Fairgrounds in San Bernardino. It was less than a month ago that Gene came clOIe to pulling off a clean sweep. winning every race he was in except the Scratch Main Event. He may not have won every race this time, but he did earn a transfer every time and that nude it poaible to win both main events. Oddly enough, in the Scratch Main he raced against the same three riders that he was up against the night before at Ventura: Alan Christian, Mike Bast and his teammate, Dave Sims. At Ventura, Bast won and Gene was last. This time Bast was last and Woods won. Christian was second both times and Sims third. The Handicap First Division Main was much harder with several false . starts to overcome and, now staning on the ~O·yard line, Woods had his work cut out for him. He won, racing on the far outside of the track. That seems to work well for bim even thoiJgh it is the long way around. Up from the Junior Speedway raltks, Mooee Kennedy won his second main event this week in Division Three. His first victory came just 24 hours earlier at Ventura. Kevin Weed a , new to Speedway racing this year, has worked his way into the Second Division. In his first night at San Bernardino in Division Two, he went all the way, winning the main event with great style and speed. He had his ups and downs. though. Down because he was just trying too hard to win the race in the first lap. Now he seetns to be put~ing a lot more thought into finishing the event. A carpenter by trade, and spo/lSOred by Fantasy Records, he could easily pass himself off as a recording star. He is the new heanthrob of the bubble gum set. New winners at Ascot By Dennis Greene GARDENA, CA,JUNE28 • All three Ascot main events put new names in the record book. Starting with the Division Two Handicap Main, Jim Lawson took the checkered flag weU out in front of the pack, breaking Moose Kennedy's two straight nights of winning. Moving into Division One and their Handicap Main Event, Keith Larsen, in his first ride in Division One, took the big money race of the night, just holding off Leni Faas at the finish hne. The four fastest riders of the night came t~ther in the Scratch' Main Event, with Frank Adamo earning his very first Scratch Main win of the year. The four· lap event was led nearly all the way by 17·year-old Tony Briggs, but in the last closing feet, with the checkered flag in sight. Frank went right up against the wall and squeaked on by for the win. Leni Faas got third and Shawn Moran rounded out the field. Christian sweeps Costa Mesa By Dennis Greene COSTA MESA. CA. JUNE 29 To the best of my knowledge, it's been over four years since anyone has won every heat race, every semi and both the Scratch and Handicap Main Events in one night. It's called a clean sweep. Over the years. just a small handful of riders have mana~d to win both main events in the same nigh I. Back on April 27, the second night of racing at Costa Mesa, Alan Christian did win both mains. Now just two months later. Alan pulled off the clean sweep. In all events. he rode to the top of his ability putting on a show of skill and talent.
