The Wheelies were offering $100 to the person who could break the hill record in the Exhibition class, and the boys on the big bikes were trying their best to tear it up. Tom Hairston (]OOOcc Triumph) and Mike Jones (8OOcc Triu~ph) were running 10% nitro and 90% alcohol plus chains. ames Blamon (750 Triumph) tried chains. Will Alford aod his 750 Kawasaki showed their stuff in the 750cc class. His second run looked like it would be top time. After two other nine plus seconds runs, he topped the hill in 9:]6 seconds. J.D. Driver, riding his son's Triumph, tried to catch him but the clock stopped at 9:80 seconds. . The Open class riders tried their best to knock Alford out of the saddle. Tom Anderson on a 1000cc Triumph came the closest with 9:88 seconds. Hairston ";as close behind with 9:95 seconds. They both tried again in the Exhibition class to beat Alford. Anderson's best run took 9:65 seconds and gave him third. Hairston went faster too, but his fastest run took 9:59 seconds. Alford still had one go for the money. He carne to the line and cranked the throttle open. 500 feet later the clocked showed he had taken 9:05 secondi. The $100 will have to wait for next time. Results . 100: 1.
