This meant that Holden and Gleason were to face each other for the final. After some very careful staging, both Kawies came off the line, side by ,side, like a mirror image. But Holden just couldn't keep all his honepower channeled through the rear tire and Gleason aced him out 8.68 to 9.04. The next Dragbike event at Fremont will be held on August 18-19. This two day race will be a National points meet. Results CERTIFICATE ClASSES: 1. Dennis Philipie IH·DI; 2. Bob r..- (Suzl; 3. Mike Talbot (Norl; 4. Robin Doboon IKawI; 5. Rey lncerty (Kaw); 6. Bast bombs at -Sacramento By Chuck Woodbury SACRAMENTO, CA,JUNE 15 Fifteen-hundred speedway fans flocked. to Sacramento's Cal Expo dirt track to see what southern Califoma ace Mike Bast could do against the best speedway riders in NorCal. Bast didn't do much. Except for a win in his scratch heat, the six· time American speedway champ did little to illustrate his impressive credentials. On the other hand,' Mike Faria and Mark Prince were impressive in their victories in the Scratch and Handicap events. Bast didn't have much luck, either, on an impromptu match race. At the prodding of a well-lubricated (beer) track announcer, Ron Kay.- fans coughed up $61 for a halftime match between local favorite Duane Yarrow and Bast. The two lined up, the gate was raised, and two blurs made two laps around the oval. Yarrow won. Maybe Bast's biorhythms were bad. Mark Prince was not the favorite in the Handicap Main but he didn't let that fact stop him. Starting from the IO·yard line. he had to contend with the Faria brothers - Mike and Dave, Yarrow, Glenn Hutchinson apd the ever-ilJtimidating Bast. But Prince went out in front immediately and that was the story of the race. Dave Faria spent a lot of time trying to catch Prince but he had no luck getting by the speedster from Sacratnento. Bast was back in last place making a futile effor! to move up. The six·man field stayed tight to the finish line but it was Prince leading ,the .way and earning the chance to engage the trophy girl in some serious endurancekissing. The Scratch Main was a battle between Mike Faria and Bast, although the two riders rounding out the field, Denny Pyeatt and Paul Orlandi, made the event the most hody·contested race of the evening. Faria won the pole position and used the starting spot well as he leaped out in front and the foursome settled into the first curve of the fifth·mile oval. B.ast was second in hot pursuit. Pyeatt and ~rlandi were a bIt off the pace and dueling for third place. Faria's small lead evaporated as the race entered the final lap. The crowd came to their feet as Faria ana Bast rounde4 the final curve. Bast blasted off and it looked like he might catch Faria. But Mike's lead was. big enough to hold off Bast's charge and the checkered flag went to Faria. . Charlie Morse won the Handicap WEAR THEBES Consolation after making a gutsy inside move on early leader Harland Bast. Duane Yarrow rode to an easy victory in the Scratch Consolation. Travel Locey and Janninp take it to the wire at Sprockets Park By Judy Greenberg BAKERSFIELD, CA,JUNE 16 The cool Bakersfield evenings make a perfect setting for Satur· day night racing, which got underway at Sprockets Park, this ·-month .. The well-prepared course, with many sweeps, turns and whoops, was' run backwards, offering further chaIlenge to the many riders who turned· out for this night's event. Tim Locey, mounted on a Yamaha for AI Bakers FMF, took home the larger purse for the 250cc Pro class, with strong leads in both motos. The first time out, Andy Jannings and his Cole Bros. ~aico rim strong behind Locey, as Brett Cross (Hon) and Doug Lawrence (Yam) dueled for third. Gary Jones moved into fifth after a heated battle with Eddie Sanders. Cross broke loose from Lawrence and closed in on jannings in the last lap: finishing with a few bikelengths between them. Jones ran into trouble and Danny Thompson passed Sanders in time to finish fifth behind Lawrence. It was Locey wire to wire in moto two.
