-I NORTHERN DATELME e ~ ::s -, The LangoshfMcDowell team was flying high lit Sears Point. Peewee,Gleason tapped out low E.T. for the day at Fremont. class, some real handlebar clashing In the first comer, there was a spill involving Langosh/McDowell that scattered the spectators: The team drove through the fence and flipped. On lap three Butterfield/Zemke dropped back. due to an injured hand which was causing the driver some pain, whereupon the back markers started to move up. The jump was the high point for a large group of spectators who saw the Palfreyman/Lund team "get some air" and some near spills at that point. LangoshlMcDowell moved up towards the end of the moto to dice with the Whitney/Whitney and BUllerfieid/HiIlteam. Ralph Whitney and son Scott should have won going away but they chose to stay with the others and dice to give the spectators, a show. Unfortunately, no white flag alerting the riders to the final lap was given as a warning. As it turned out, at the checkered flag Whitney found himself in second without room to get past the Butterfield/HiD rig. But the spectators loved it! competition. Patterson shot his 450cc Maico into an early lead with Stewart right on his tail. The two pulled far away from the rest of the pack with Patterson able to hold off Stewart's charge. Then on hie last lap, a broken chain adjuster slowed Patterson and the KTM rider took the fim mota win. Patterson was . still able to finish a solid third. The second mota start. was just the reverse of the first, with Stewart out front and Patterson in second. A few laps later Patterson got by Stewart and the order staYed that way until the finish with the two never more than a few seconds apart. . The overall victory would be decided in the third and final moto of the day. Stewart took the lead but Patterson eventually passed him until the Maico developed enlrtne trouble. Stewart regained the lead with Patterson desperately trying to coax his ailing bike into finishing the race. But it was to no avail. The Maico quite all together, leaving the overall to Stewart. The day wasn't a complete loss for Patterson. He came away with the overall win in the 250cc Expert claSll where he had to fight off a hard· charging Cal Frey. The first two motos followed the same pattern; Frey would pull a ho1eshot on his Kawasaki and Patterson, still Mako mounted, would hang onto Frey's rear fender until the last few laps when Patterson berserked himself past Frey. The third moto followed the same pattern except that this time Patterson's rear tire went flat, allowing Frey to r~ and take the moto win. The l25cc Expert class was totally dominated by. Suzuki mounted Jeff Wolverton. Wolverton won all three motos wi'th the nearest rider more than a half a lap behind. , .. 46 Results _• MINt: 1. _ IK8wl: 2. IteYin Sdwub lSuz): 3. Rain halls Castle Rock TT By Michelle McDaniel CASTLE ROCK, WA,jUNE 16 Under Cloudy skies and a threat of rain, the Castle Rock races got underway with a reverse program. With the Expert and Novice heats out of the way, the very firslJunior heat on the line was washed out by the rain. Events that were run before the deluge were paid on a percentage basis on the finish of heats. Brad Hurst, National number 51, put in a sizzling lap around the TT at Castle rock to come up with a 25.79, for a first in the 25 bracket this year. Also, Junior Erick Swanson set fast tinie with a ~4.59. It was certainly a disappointment for him when he was left silting on the line of the first Junior ·heat when the Washington sky opened up. Originally there was to have been a two-moto race before and after the National motocross events but in practice a mud hole strewn with straw had turned to adobe which became so dense that the wheels of the hacks locked up. As a result it was decided to hold off the sidehack event until the last of the day. Those wbo- stayed liked what they saw. The teams of Whitney and Whitney, Butterfield/Zemke and Butterfield/Hill led off in that order. 17S0 Na
