WeB,' the weather was mild, but there was definitely something hot about this day,., - the action at Paul Orlandi's s~way racing at the Gold County Fairgrounds in the quaint, Sierra foothill community of Auburn. Duane Yarrow and Mike Faria shared top honors .with victories in the Handicap and Scratch Main as a crowd of 750 fans enjoyed the evening's events. Faria won both his Scratch Heat and Semi-final enroute to his victory in the Scratch Main.. From hiS outside 'pole position in the main, Faria jumped immediately in front 'ahead of a tough trio of challengers: Dennis Robinson, Paul Orlandi and .John Cook. Orlandi closed on Faria early in . the race but by the third lap Faria's. lead was, slowly expanding. Meanwhile, Robinson and Cook were battling for third spot. Cook got it when Robinson bailed late in the third lap and retiried. Faria's lead over Orlandi continued to increase and the Richmond rider won comfortably with Orlandi holding on for second. Cook finished third. \ The Handicap Main event victory went to Yarrow but he had a tough fight from Glenn Hutchinson through most of the race.. Yarrow grabb~ the lead as the six· rider field rounded the first turn, but Hutchinson. who had been riding hot all night, was right .behind him. Denny Pyeatt and Mike Faria were not far behind in third and fourth, Tom Ferris followed in fifth. Orlandi, who had come off the line in last place, .dropped out in the second lap. Yarrow and Hutchinson continued to fight it out in front while Faria barely held off Pyeatt to maintain his hold on third .place. Then, as the field rounded the last turn, Hutchinson fell. Faria slipped by the downed rider but Pyeatt was on a collision course and dec.ided to drop his bike to avoid a crash with Hutchinson. Faria eased across the finish line in second and Ferris followed for third. Pyeatt was awar.ded fourth. John Cook won the Handicap COl1S9lation, finishing with a 50·yard lead ·over Dennis Robinson. Hutchinson won the Scratch Consolation after gettitlg by early leaders Yarrow and Ferris. Little Mark Bast put together a win in the Junior Handicap Main after a neck and neck bat$le with Andy.
