lights working before being released from the club grounds. Perhaps it was because the survivors were, after all, survivors - there was a much more businesslike air to the remaining field in spite of the rain, in spite of the mud. Everybody seemed determined to buckle down and do it. Bikes that had been largely unrecognizable even after service-area de-mudding became even. more so. Even the normally cosmetic SWMs were reduced to an even shade of browJl. Attrition still took its toll. AI Zitta, who bad done well Saturday. was in time trouble by Check seven and out at eight. Rilndy Mastin got as far as Cbeck nine. Lyle Duronso (Yam) was . clean to Check nine, then broke his CDI unit and was out. Tony Locchesi (KTM) houred out at 10; Ed Davis houred out at nine. Dan Amor, who herded a 500cc Honda thrqugh Saturday's running, also DNF. Orrin Leimbach (KTM) clobbered his foot and dropped out early Sunday. Of those still in the hunt, Terry Cunningham (Mili) dropped points at Checks three and seven; Vern Pacholke (Bul~ racked up over 3000 route points but finished; August Kooistra managed to berd a KDX Kaw in with 2460 route points. Greg Davis, who had been so quick on the little 125cc Husky, got into time trouble by Check eight, was floundering in the mud with fatigue, but still finished. For. some: the heartbreaker came almost at the end. Four miles from tbe finish, a number of riders missed a turn on the road and got lost. Among the "worst lost" was Gary Edmonds, who fried his engine racing for the finish check and was unable to start his MX heat. Randy Martin (Suz) was also burned, as was Morris Norman (SWM). However, Drew Smith made it in clean, and again turned a fast MX time, although slower by split seconds than Kevin LaVoie. And therein hangs a tale, as the two were gridded in the same MX heat and jumped off the line in hpt contention. LaYoie powered the 420cc KTM into an early lead, which he held for one·and-a-half laps. Then Kevin fell in a tight corner under hard pressure from Smith. Restarting, LaVoie began reeling in Smith's slim lead. At the white flag, they were barely a second apart. Foot by foot the gap clsoed, as the two riders ducked in and out of the woods on the twisty, tacky Hannegan motocross track. Back into view they came, inches apart, aiming for the final turn - a fast dog-leg bank shot. LaVoie did it with a final spun of throttle, hitting a pivot inches ahead of Smith's front wheel in a perfect block-passl Time out for a collective gasp as the spectators remembered to breathe again. Smith's collective times were good enough for a c1eancut win, 2429.25 points total (the only one under 2500). Mike Rosso's class-winning 2500.3 would have been good for second overall, and LaVoie's final score was 2557.85, to win the Open class. Dane Leimbach, still clean on time, took the 125cc class with 2659; Greg Davis, humongous point total and all, was the only other 125 to finish. Carl Cranke was sole. survivor in the 350's, with 2 6 4 7 . . SID POGUE-1979IDBA Pro Stock WINNER • Valvoline Sunshine Nationals - Memphis. T'" • Kawasaki Supernatlonals - Louisville.
