NomERN DATELINE but johnson regained the star position and Starks throttled it to the max to stuff his mount into ~cond. johnson wallr.ed away with the 7·11 first place trophy, Starks did a first place number in the 12·15 class and Thomas received second. A green 'GO' flashed and the Mini Stock Novice class began their quest to checkerville. jeff Holton (Suz) threw caution to the wind with a lead ride while Dan Beck (Kaw) and Robert Bills (Suz) ~t their sights on the second spot. Bills hammered into the spot, went after the lead position, then the checks flashed a shut-down. Bob Snow (Suz) outfoxed the bunch in the second moto by blasting into holeshot land, but two determined contenders, Holton and Beck, charged in with dicing maneuvers. Snow and Holton diced them~lves out of the game and Beck took over the top spot. Sean Hart (Yam) and Alan Headman (Suz) knocked ~cond around until the last lap, then Headman snagged the place and shot away. Meanwhile, Holton was dialing a frantic ride all the way home to a first place trophy, Beck got the second place prize and Headman zoomed away with third, Results PEE WEE: 1. Mlm Smith lhal; 2. CA 90717 213-534-2311 Mike Faria and Dennis Robinson wrapped up wins in Scratch and Handicap main events in the third round of AMA speedway racing at Auburn's Gold Country Fair· grounds. A crowd of 750 spectators witnessed the races on a rather dry, one·futh mile track. Robinson found his groove and stayed in it as he rode to the win in the Handicap Main. As the .field of six riders rounded the first curve it was Robinson out in from with Fairfield's Duane Yarrow and Placerville's Tom Ferris in pursuit. The trio stayed tight for two laps, but into the third Robinson began to open up his lead. Meanwhile, Ferris was making a move on ~cond place Yarrow, slipping by the purple· and-pink leathered (outrageous!) ride-r and holding on for a second place finish. Yarrow followed in third with Hi-Point's john Cook ~ttling for fourth. Mike Faria was noticeably ab~nt from the race, the victim of clutch problems that kept him well off the pace in the earlier Handicap sem;-final. Faria led from start to fmish to win the Scratch Main. Robinson won the pole position with Glen Hutchinson, Yarrow and Faria alongside. But it was Faria, with a superb start from his outside starting slot, who took the lead as the riders rounded the first comer. Robinson settled into second with Hutchinson and Yarrow pulling up the rear. The positions held to the checkers, although Yarrow did some aerobatics as he wiped out heading into the third lap. AI Yarrow won the Division II Main, but only after a spectacular crash between Dave Norman and Steve Elstin halted the race. Yarrow led at that point and even though he was passed after the mishap by Steve Moore, he was declared the winner. Earlier in the evening, Moore and Elstin had dueled in an exciting Division II heat with Moore edging out Elnin at the finish line for a crowdpleasing win. Dave Faria won the Handicap Consolation, with john Cook easily winning the Scratch Consolation. National Motorcycle Patrol benefit motocross By Sallee Hilton PLYMOUTH, CA, JUNE 3 Donnie Cantaloupi and Dean Wiggins were the big money winners at the benefit motocross promoted by AMA District 36 officials who turned over 100% of the· proceeds to the National Motorcycle Patrol. The Patrol is comprised of volunteer "motorcyclists helping motorcyclists" by offering first aid care to the injured. Over 300 riders braved hot weather and the gasoline shortage to show their appreciation for all that the Patrol does for them. Stockton rider Donnie Cantaloupi took to the well prepared, black sand cou~ like a duck to water. He flew his Moto-X·Fox Yamahas to four moto wins for the biggest ~m;'pro payback of the day, ousting Dan Turner to ~cond in the 250cc class and third in the 125cc. Dana Waxham provided some heavy competition in the 125cc motos, finishing ~cond in both of them. jeff Cloutier (Mai), with a third and a fourth finish, took third overaJI cash in the 250cc race over Dean Wiggins (Mai) who finished sixth and third. Wiggins shined in the Open class, claiming first place money in both motos, while Cloutier and Rick Woodson (Mai) shared seconds. Richard Buttner disrupted the Maico reign by taking his Yamaha across the line in third place twice, pulling ~cond overall pay. The very large Veterans class was led by Expert Redgie Mull (Mai). Roger Bubak (Bul) was the top junior and "Trash" Terry McDonald (Yam) was the Novice winner. A better than usual turnout in the Powder Puff class had 11 of the girls going for it and Debra Irby (Yam) taking it. Many of the riders were blessed with prizes and contingencies donated by over 75 merchants, dealers and distributors, totaling up to thousands of dollars. Two motorcycles were donated, and
