Fishback, Sandona Costa Mesa wins By Dennis Greene Co.STA MESA CA, JUNE 22 At long last, it looks like the hatchet has been buried between Dan McNeill and Gene Woods and, I am happy to say, not in each. other's heads. The running battle came to a head Friday night when Gene Woods lay on the ground right in front of the oncoming Dan McNeill. Woods had gone down all by himself and Dan had a couple of choices: try to miss him, run over him. run into the wall or lay it down hard. In a flash, he had laid it down and. like in the rodeo. was burying the handle-bars in the ground to stop the bike. He got it stopped and as Woods rolled over to get up he was looking at the underside of Dan's motor and was well aware that if it had been a rider with a litle less talent. he could have ended up with a broken back. It took lOme time, but there was a handshake after the night'S competition. lkcause of last week's run-in, when McNeill pulled the kill switch on Woods, he.was set down for one night of racing at COIIta Mesa, but will be back on the sixth ofJuly. Dave Miller, motocrOllS star turned speedway racer, added one more win to his record in Division Two racing and this time it was from the 50-yard line and· that's where you can be moved into Division One when there is an opening. Big Jim Fishback makes his opening and races through them for the wins, this time in the Scratch Main Event, a very tight race between Brad Oxley, Jim, Gene Woods and Mark Marriott. This was Jim's First Scratch win of the season John Sandona got his first Handicap win of the season as well.
