the loose dirt, fmding the traction that
moves him along 10 well, for yet
another win. This one may have b«n
the hardest for him, with Dan McNeiU·
riding in second place making one
charge after another in a super show of
skill, to end up in the number two
spot.
As speedway grows around the
country, we get visitors from other
states. Rick Workman, a racer from
back east, has added his name to the
winners' book in California, winning
the Division Two Handicap Main
Event.
Fishback, Sandona
Costa Mesa wins
By Dennis Greene
Co.STA MESA CA, JUNE 22
At long last, it looks like the
hatchet has been buried between
Dan McNeill and Gene Woods
and, I am happy to say, not in
each. other's heads. The running battle
came to a head Friday night when
Gene Woods lay on the ground right in
front of the oncoming Dan McNeill.
Woods had gone down all by himself
and Dan had a couple of choices: try
to miss him, run over him. run into the
wall or lay it down hard. In a flash, he
had laid it down and. like in the
rodeo. was burying the handle-bars in
the ground to stop the bike. He got it
stopped and as Woods rolled over to
get up he was looking at the underside
of Dan's motor and was well aware
that if it had been a rider with a litle
less talent. he could have ended up
with a broken back. It took lOme time,
but there was a handshake after the
night'S competition.
lkcause of last week's run-in, when
McNeill pulled the kill switch on
Woods, he.was set down for one night
of racing at COIIta Mesa, but will be
back on the sixth ofJuly.
Dave Miller, motocrOllS star turned
speedway racer, added one more win
to his record in Division Two racing
and this time it was from the 50-yard
line and· that's where you can be
moved into Division One when there is
an opening.
Big Jim Fishback makes his opening
and races through them for the wins,
this time in the Scratch Main Event, a
very tight race between Brad Oxley,
Jim, Gene Woods and Mark Marriott.
This was Jim's First Scratch win of the
season
John Sandona got his first Handicap
win of the season as well. That main
event was very tight with Dave
DeTemple and Brad Oxley both
fighting for fmt place.
