Dust and heat have halted OMRA desert events until fall. This "Mother's Day 100" was the last run until fall, so now the riden have to be content to trail ride, motocross, or Tide enduros. Central Oregon BLM does not allow desen racing during the summer months. But that's just as well, as the riders would not appreciate the mountainous clouds of volcanic dust. The "Mother's Day 100" was advertised as "two days of woods riding" that's what they got. A team race on an 18 mile course took place Saturday and a 52 mile course was tackled Sunday. Friday, riders were already arriving in an area the USFS had granted permission to use as a starting and camping area that many desert riders had worked on two and one-half years previous. A beautiful spot to camp, almost dust free, as the ground is "pop com pumice," ("pop corn pumice" is small white rocks that are so light they float on water) plenty of jack pines to camp under. The only disadvantage to this nice wooded area is a smaller starting area than the desert rider is used to. There's room enough to start maybe 100 riders, so the USFS put an 80 rider limit on the start. The start was on a big pumice flat .that narrows down to a pretty tight trail that has big whoops in it. The team event had 66 teams which were divided into four groups: Lightweight and heavyweight Amateur and lightweight and heavyweight Expert. All of the Experts started first. A local rider, Don MarcouIier, tangled handlebars with another rider in those big whoops, unloaded, and broke some venebrae in his back. Marcoulier was hospitalized for a couple of days, but is up walking around now. In the next wave, (Amateur LW & HW) Jim Hogan of Kent, W A was used for traction by some unknown rider. No serious injuries, but it was bad enough that he didn't ride anymore Saturday or at all on Sunday. The team course consisted of very tight trails and some very fast roads, 18 miles in length, with each rider making three laps, changing riders each lap. Dale Demaris and Tom Lillis proved their last team win in February was no fluke by also winning this one. Sunday morning, 119 riders had signed up to ride. Due to the pile ups on Saturday's stan, it was decided to have several starts. Dead engine, straddle the front wheel. Club member Denny Howard held up his bright orange jacket and when he dropped it everyone on the line headed . across the white pumice flat about 500 yards to the stan of the trail. All Experts and Old Timers went in the first wave. Then the Open Amateurs, then the 250cc Amateurs and then everyone else, which co~isted of the 200cc Amateurs, 125cc Amateurs and the Trail Bike class. Each stan was followed by a club member on a bike with the Deschutes County Search & Rescue ambulance near by. When it was, determined that no riders were lying on the course in the first mile, the next wave was staned. There was some concern that the 250cc or Open Experts would negotiate the 52 mile course before the last wave was started. No problem. It was taking the ExpeTts about 55 minutes per lap. The Experts finally did catch up and they lapped many rideo on their third lap. At the end of lap one Joe McCormick was in the lead, followed closely by Dale Demaris, both riding 250cc Husqvarnas. Close behind was Ed Davis. the eventual winner, riding a !l90cc Husky. McCormick later dropped out and Demaris held the lead until somewhere on the third lap, He fouled a plug and then could not c.atch the hard charging Ed Davis for the overall win, Davis, of Tacoma, WA has never ridd~n the high desert of Oregon before and he had a fantastic ride. Oregon residents are required to join OMRA to ride desert events. Out· of-state riders can join and go for points and trophies for the three top ride,rs in each class. The out·of-state riders are doing alright with Ron Dillon of Caldwell, 10 leading the 250cc Expert division; Willis Taylor leading the 125cc Amateurs; Richard McUne of Selah, W A leading the Open Amateurs; Bob Bushey of Canby, CA in charge of the 250cc Amateurs; Vancouver, WA rider Mike Richart has the lead in the 125cc Expen. These mid-season standings are unofficial, but I believe accurate. That's five out of 10 classes: Come on you Oregon riders. Are you going to stand still for third?
