• • Kawauki KX 390/420 SR: Brad Lackey had been using a 390cc engine in his Uni-Trek "Quacker" for the first four GP races in Europe, but for the Carlsbad race, he and Jimmy Weinert were on the 420cc versions from the sounds of things. The Uni-Trak rear _pension with Kayaba gas/oil raservoir shock trIIcked its way excellently over the gnarly Carlsbad track. Travel at each end Is 300mm with Kayaba air/spring works forks up front. With alumlnumcased engines tMse were among the heavier bikes on the track at 230 pounds. Husqvarna 3901430 CR: Chuck Sun just got an all new 430cc six-speed prototype from the Husky factory In Sweden for Carlsbed featuring primary klek sterting. For the race, though, Eric Cripps Installed a 390cc cylinder to keep things a little more managable. New production bikes this fall might have a 417cc cylinder. Weight was still slightly heavy at 230 pounds. KTM 420-79: Jean-Jecques Bruno won one World Champlonahlp moto this seeson on whet Is a basically stock 420cc KTM. Changes Included modified damping In the Marzocchi front forks and an Increase In travel to 300mm. Prototype Ohlins piggyback raservoir shocks aren't much different from production reservoir models. Weight was surprisingly light at 225 pounds. CCM 500-79: Clews Competition Machines builds this 498cc four-valve fourstroke single cylinder monster. CCM magnesium slider forks used airl springs to offer 289mm of front wheel travel. Rear suspension Is also 280mm with White Power gas/oil reservoir shocks. 34 Yamaha OW 41: The works Yarnahas get an IlIer• •e in engine ~ this season, now up to 454cc on World Champion Helkkl Mikkola's bike. The American riders may still ba running 425cc motors. Also different on Helkki's bike is a trick new raservoir monoahock unit with attached fIoBting piston reservoir and. ramote fram.mounted air chamber. AH the Yamahes tipped the scales between 217 pounds for Rick Burgett's bike to 221 pounds for Helkki's. Maleo 450-79: Box stock for the Maleo team. Just a little cylinder porting to make up for the lack of reed valve Induction. The rear shocks were either Ohllns remote reservoirs or Fox AirShoxs as on American Parry Klassen's bike. Klassen was the top placing Melco rider at Carlsbad.
