KS, MA Y 29 The day got off to a wild start when half the riders in the 125cc heat piled up in the south end. Renee Kennedy. Dawnel Berry Holem 1125 Ex.) rushes to a win at Flint Hills. soon rifled his EI Dorado Yamaha/ Kenny Powers machine to the front as Boston moved his Boston Cycles KX into second. Holem had to hop to battle Boston off throughout both motos but Holem won. Boston shot to the front of the first 250cc Expen moto while Holem had to play catch·up. But he never did. Boston took the first moto win with Holem second. . Boston again shot to the front in the last moto where he stayed for a lap and a half until he bobbled and let Holem by. The duo went at it for the rest of the moto. a real battle, but Holem held on to win. The wild and crazy 125cc Juniors put on their usual heart·stopping show. David Kleusch is making the transition to a bigger bike after past seasons of success on minis. He battled off Don Kornbrust and Scott Koons to take the win. Results MINI NOlI: 1. Ilruce Bolon. LMy' Olinger, Mike Clarke, Eddie Hillman and George Englethron all bit the dust. Todd Ratliff was gone like a rocket on the restart, and won it by a large margin, but a hot ballie developed for second bet ween Jerry Hill, Todd Hilyard and Kirk England. Near the end, Hilyard got a wheel into Hill and went down in the switchback, taking England with him. Both got up and finished the race. Mel Watson lOok the lead in one of the 250cc heats but fell off going into the big sweeper in the north end as Culver passed him on the outside. Gary Garrison led another 250cc heat but threw a chain in the uphill. leaving Max Wilson to battle off Scott Novotny for the win. Ratliff led a 500cc heat but Schlickau got by on the inside and won, Brooks (the wet head) ran away with the other 500cc heat. Wilson led Tim Lindfors for two laps in the Open heat but Tim eventually got by and won. Scott Murray and Scotty Scherb battled over the Mini heat with Murray barely winning, Dallas Babcoc and Novotny were the other heat winners. Scherb took the lead in the Mini final while Murray bogged down on the line, One lap later. on the front chute. Murray had already worked up to second, Steve Harvey fell in the switchback while Murray fell in the south end and the race was stopped. A single file restart had Murray at the back but before they got to turn two he was already in second. He played cat· n·mouse with Scherb and then took the lead in the same spot he had crashed in earlier. Kennedy and Hill were relegated to the ~nahy row in the 125cc final; ....JtMJiIL J~~& Ji~l\an ,Qq •• , Ron Belt hoists his Coors trophy: wistful starter sighs. opened it up. A 10·lap battle for second ensued when Hillman ran off the track and Hilyard took over third. England moved up behind Hilyard and these two fought for position all the way to the finish. Babcock made quick work of the 200cc class with a big win while Novotny waited for Hilyard to get sideways so he could slip into secood. Culver led Wilson off the line in the 250cc final and the two-ran away with il. Bishop held third until Hackeroll got by on - one lap and a lap later Randy Koster got by for fourth. The thunder of 12 500cc four· strokes rocked the countryside as Schlickau led Brooks and Snyder through their paces. A lap later Belt got by Ratliff for fourth and then moved up to battle Snyder the rest of the race for third. Lindfors took the Open final lead from the start while Max Wilson had his hands full trying to hold off Mark Kumle for second. He held out 'til the end. Results MINI: 1. SCot1 Murray; 2. By Dick Ainsworth LINCOLN, NE, MAY 27 A "three· ring circus" is how you would describe the speedway, stadium cross and flat ·track show at Midwest Speedway which is put on by racers who really know how to take care of the fans. After Ron Belt and Nick Huston swapped the lead back and fonh in 250cc heat. which Belt won, a 500cc heat found Belt leap to the front and sJat there with Huston dOR behind. - . John Holub came from fifth to second in one lap, but went high, hit the wall, and dropped to eighth. He came back suong to work all the way back up to second at the end. The Coors Beer sponsored trophy dash, made up of heat race winners, had Belt and Huston shoot by Erickson to battle for the lead. Huston led with Belt first trying the inside and then the outside before taking command on the inside of turn one. Belt went on to win by a margin of three bike lengths. Mike Grubbs and ,Stewart Alley staged a super battle in the first 250cc MX moto. Grubbs took the lead but Alley got by in the wheops. Dan Kelly came from fifth to third while the leaders battled. On lap five they came off the big jump shoulder to shoulder but Grubbs bobbled on the last lap and Alley won. Grubbs took the lead over Alley, Mike Quinn and Kelly in the last moto. Grubbs and Alley pulled away from the field and batned the entire distance with Grubbs eventually winning. Terry Hawk grabbed the Open MX first moto lead and held it until Steve Rohr got.by in the whoops. Ray Rohr moved up to battle Hawk for second as Steve won big. Steve Rohr took the lead in the last moto but Ken Brooks was close until Rohr shoolt free and won it going away. Kirk England and Mike Erickson ran away with the 125cc final but England had too much horsepower for Erickson's old worn out Honda. Niclt Huston led the 250cc final as Erickson got under Rob Goodwin on lap three. Erickson then took off after Huston caught him on lap five and got by coming out of the second turn. Huston and Ron Belt bumped shoulctfors in the 500cc final; Holub shot by into second but couldn't catch Bell. • Results OPEN FLAT TRACK: 1. Miko Erickson ITri); 2. Nick Huston IT.i); 3.
