With his new leathers shining in the dark, Jeff Carme1l0 won the Division Two Main Event, pUlling him among the front runners in overa1l wins in Second Division. He's worked his way back to the 10 yard line after working his way all the way through Third Division. The Brothers Bast met head to head in the Scratch Main Event, along with Jim Fishback and Dan McNei1l. Mike Bast got the jump at the start, but McNei1l. who had been pUlling on outstanding rides a1l night, pushed hard for the lead and was first into tum one, making it by far the fastest race ofthe night. Big Jim Fishback got past McNei1l when he went too wide in the loose dirt. Jim pu1led a wheelie and slipped on by to take over second place. McNeill kept working hard to get second place back, but his efforts were in vain. He got third with Steve Bast rounding out the field in founh. Robin Bourgeois worked his way in and out of fa1len riders on his way to victory in the Third Division Main. He ended up with the Main Event win and got a lillie more than he was looking for at the trophy presentation when two of the young girls jumped him. Of course, he didn't put up much of fight at a1l. If you want to kill two birds with one stone, yon can see two shows for the price of one on the Fourth of July, which is a Wednesday night. The regular Speedway show will be run, f01l0wed by a free fireworks display for a1l. Curoso homes in on Ascot By Dennis Greene GARDENA, CA,JUNE 14 Each week, Ascot comes up with new winnNS and this Thursday night was no exception. Back from a three-year campaign in Berdoo belongs to Bast By Dennis Greene SAN BERNARDINO, CA,JUNE]!l 40 Just two weeks ago, Joe Meylor won the Division Two Main Event, which, along with several other wins, gave him a shot at th~ Fitst DMsion. Tonight Joe got into the Handicap Main Event, where he staned on the zero yard line and, with an open track in front of him, he flew for the five laps all the way to the winners' circle. A special Feature Match Race put Mike Bast, staning on the 100 yard line, up against the three young ladies of Speedway - Pam Bennell, Margo King and Bobbi Hunter. All the ladies were on the zero yard line. It took a1l three laps of the event for Mike to overtake the front runner, Bobbi Europe, Mike Curoso found the big track right up his alley. He won the Scratch Main Event over a field of riders who all have Ascot wins to their credit - Gene Woods, Frank Adamo and Shawn Moran. Coming back from a broken leg, Mike Muntean picked up his first Main Event win of the year in the Handicap half of the show. Mike looked good all the way around the big oval, with Bob McLain breathing down his neck all the way. Sonny Nutter, a big pan of. U_S. Speedway history, ca1led it quits last year when he went into racing midget cars.. Just like when he was in speedway, he has become a superstar. He brought his car out and gave the fans a little more than they paid for, with a short exhbition after the regular speedway show. Rounding out the night, Keith Larsen won the Division Two Handicap Main Event. At this time it's JUSt a rumor, but Danny Becker may yet try one more comeback to speedway. If the right people come through, you may just see Becker riding for the former U.S. National Speedway Champ, now retired, Rick Woods. And why not? Becker was the first of a long line of riders who Rick helped to get staned in the sport, the brightest star, of course, being his own brother, Gene .~oods. Muntean cleans-up at Costa Mesa By Dennis Greene COSTA MESA, CA,JUNE 15 Restarts, restarts, and more restarts were the order of the night and there was nothing at all anyone' could blame it on. It was from start to fmish one very strange night of racing. Three different events sawall but one rider go down; several others saw half the field go down and would you believe no one got hun? Here's one for the book and the AMA doesn't even have a rule for it. In the Handicap Main Event, the big money race of the night, Dan McNeill got off to a poor stan. He laid back until Gene Woods came alongside of hini and Dan tried to block him. . Woods wanted no pan of this game, he was there to race. As Woods staned to race, McNeill reached over and pulled out the dead man switch, which is on the handlebars for the riders' safety (it is to keep a bike from running wild if you go down). Woods' bike came to an abrupt SlOp. It may sound funny, but without power, you can't &Yen get out of the way. Last week, McNeill got a heavy fine for starting a fight bn the track. He threw the only punch. The L.A. Times dicfa big story on him, calling him dangerous and that was the nice pan. I called him a hot-tempered young man. The battle between Gene Woods and pan McNeill up to this point has been very low· key. It stems from the fact that McNeill's sponsor dropped
