He grabbed the holeshot and managed to hold it although he said that he tired toward the end. He ran two classes for a total of four motos. No wonder! Mike McCormick (Yamaha of Salem) got a good stan the second 125cc Pro moto and was- able to hang in there most of the time and wound up fourth 01/el"a1l for the day. Van Epps hounded Azar the second moto but just couldn't make the pass and had to be content with a 2-2 day and second overall. Didier hung in with a top finish and got third overall. Thirty-one 250cc Pros roared off the line and again it was Clay Azar sweeping his Yamaha to the lead. Right on his fender was Tom Poage, riding for Olympic Yamaha. With the likes of Poage. Michletsch, Folck. and Anderson on his tail Aur knew he couldn't falter or it would be all over. He didn't and hung on for the win. Tim Mich1etsch got around Poage for the second spot on the last lap and Poage picked off third. Andenon was close and moving up when the flag came out, he got fourth. Rick Binckley (Everett Yamaha) rode to fifth. It was Poage all the way in the second 250cc Pro moto. He seemed to get stronger as the day progressed. His only competition came from Mike Kinnear (Cycle Mart Hus). Mike worked up from a fourth place start and stayed in second for nlDe laps to fJDish at third overall with a 1-4 day. Poage again proved his staying power by handling the Open Pro class. Riding for Yamaha International he handled both motos easily over his closnt competition. that of Montey Mitchell. Mitchell, riding for Gresham Suzu4.i, got two second place finishes for the same overall. Mark Kim. on a Maico from Iron Hone in Gresham, got a 4-3 for third overall with his consistent, smooth ride. By Lane Campbell Photos by Campbell and John Walker AUBURN/KENT, WA. MAY 20 Who'd believe it? Fun in the sun - in "rainy" Seattle! The season opener of ,the Washington Motorcycle Road Racing Association had the makings' of a spring c1allSic - bikini-clad young ladies turning lobster-red from the unaccustomed. exposure. while a 2oo-rider field went scratchin' for trophies and cash on the up-down 2.5 mile Seattle International Raceway road circuit. Canadian Greg McRae and Seattle's 1978 GP champion Bruce Lind both cashed in in a pair of GP classes (going home beller than $100 richer), while Keith Pinkstaff had a field day in two Production classes, and Castle Rock TT veteran Randy Skiver scored in Open Cafe. Each class ran a pair of heat races, with final tallies determined by "moto" scoring based on heat finishes. The second set of heats had to be shortened slightly, because 5.1. R. is presently running "under the gun" due to noise regs, and Sunday racing must finish by 5:30 p.m. WMRRA runs a feisty class of single cylinder GP bikes - Open and 250cc divisions that run in a combined heat with 125cc GP. The c1allS is a roosting place for the strange, the odd, and the downright neat machinery. Where else could a Suzuki RE-5 . rotary consistently win? Joe Rodgers,' a perennial points-earner, did it again, overhauling 250cc winner Dan Zlock (Mon) in both heats, with a 500cc BSA in there stirring things up as well. Frank Fonter, on the Beezer with the Union Jack gastank, rode so many classes he was hard to keep track of. He finished second in Open Single Heat 1, blew away the spectators on Martini Point by gobbling mid-pack
