pate .in the Modified Motorcycle
Association's first all -bike drag race of
the year. The fact that it was Mother's.
Day , coupled with the gas shortage
kept attendance down somewhat.
However, over 70 racers competed for
first , second, and th ird place trophies
in seven E T brackets.
Heartbreak of the da y was -when
Wayne Holden, riding the Snap-On
Tools sponsored A Fuel Kawasaki ,
fried his transmission. Holden, from
Shingle Springs , had already set fastest
E T of th e day with a crisp 9.01 at
159.86 mph.
One of the afternoon's bright spots
was the awardi ng of the new Ha rley
Lo-Rider which was raffled off last
month at the MMA campout. The
bike , supplied by Harley-Davidson of
San Bruno, was handed over to Ron
Terwey of Sacramento. What a happy
.dude he was as he tooled off down the
drag strip on his first ride.
Extremely hot weather brought out
a gaggle of pit woofies, and lots of suds
were consumed by the kicked back
spectators. Picking up the action with
the semi -final rounds, Bracket Two
had Dave Olivera on a Kawie ZI-R
downing James Happs. Olivera turned
a brisk 11.59 to Happs' 11.68 on a
Honda 750.
Bracket Three semi winner, Rich
Hillis pushed his Z·I to a '12.64 win
over Glen Silva on a Hog . Jim Clark,
Suzuki rider from Sacramento, got a
by run;
Bracket Four brought Boston Ron
to the line to face Norm Fisher; both
ri ders were H·D mounted. Fisher
crossed the line first with a 12.68 to
Ron 's 12.61. Dan Donnan got the big
red eye, giving the automatic win to
Pete Knell ; once again, both riders
were Harley mounted.
Bracket Five cam e up with th e
Ducati of Will Puckett aceing out
Squeeky Pete Peterson's Hog , 15.57 to
15 .45 . Dennis Felipe took an
automatic win on a bye run.
Bracket Six pa ired Harley riders
Richard Fernandez against One Eyed
Dave . Fernandez got there first , 15.20
to a losing 14.96 . "T erri ble" Tommy
Tufts singled his Hog.
The last Bracket had H ·D riders
Jack Ditmars and "Hogg Rider" pitted '
against each other, but it was easy for
Ditmars as H . Rider jumped out. Bob
Foster on a V. W. powered trike
singled, wheelieing halfway 'down the
strip.
The finals showed that everyone
meant business'. There wasn't aracer
in the place that didn't 'want to go
home with that first place gold.
Bracket Seven had Foster coming out
of the hole with no less than two more
super wheelies and getting there first
over Ditmars, Foster ran a 17.64 at
