M IKE JOH NSO N T urlock , CA Post coverage panned Your cove rage of the Post Nationa l En d u r o ( wi t h n o p ictures) wa s downright terri ble a nd an insult to the. winner, T ea m Ma ico's Don Sa nford. T he so ca lled " reporter" was obviously d istraught that his hero , five -time N ati on al Endu ro Cha mp io n _Dick Bu rleson , di d notwin . • Sanford d eserved to win beca use on t hat day, he 'ou trode a ll com pet itors , .incl ud ing Burleson , Burleson certa in ly d oesn 't need some , cub re porter to make exc uses for h im . >his record speaks . for itself. Despite Sanford 's victory , Dick appears to be on his ,way • 'to winning more Nationals than all other competitors combined and 'an unprecedented sixth N ational Championship. I'm sure that he was as embarrassed by the article as you should be to have printed it , The reporter (?) sounded more like a frustrated local Husky dealer than the unbiased journalist he was su p posed to be . As fa r as his co m ments about ga mbling and a lmost bu rning chec ks, it is too bad he d id not attend the end uro schoo l give n by Sanford a nd myself at th e las t Post End uro. He could have learned p ra cti ca l e nd uro theory that's produ ced winners. J ERRY COUNTS Ca noga Pa rk , CA I would like to publicly thank t he Western States Racing Association for putting on a challenging and safe ninth annual Virginia City Grand . Prix , This was my and the Cross County Association's fifth VCGP, It was great . to see a Kookie III ,. the number one Desert Woofer doing it: it must undoubtedly beat ch asing cats. Also , I have a suggestion for ra ising money for th e Phantom Duck of the Dese rt. Instead of go ing to your weekly ' psychotherapy session and lying on your sh rink's co uch , go to you r garage , lie under you r scoot (u n less it's Engl ish ). a rid sen d the sa ved bucks to t he Du ck , "SH R IN K" VOGT, Ph.D , Cl in ical Psychologist Reno, NV A reader of distinction Oregon BLM clarification I feel Mr. Griffin's letter in the Ma y 16th issue needs some clarification . First. Mr. Arrasmith of the Prineville , OR BLM met with Griffin and the rest of us in Portland onl y because he had official business in Portland that day , Mr . Griffin sta ted in his lette r this m eet ing wa s not a "confrontation ." Mr . Arrasmith had agreed to meet with Guy Griffin , When he and Zeke Ziegl er walked into Griffin's offi ce th ey were confronted with eight ORV people who were upset because the Prin evill e office had th rea tened to close land to all riding during the su m mer and a partial closu re during the winter. Tha t is wha t I ca ll a confrontation. . Mr. G riffin still would be unaware of this proposed closure if it were not for the Cascade M,C . rider awareness program th rough their own mailings and through OMRA. The Cascade M,C . a nd seve ra l ot he r clubs have worked closely on a friendly basis with BLM fo r sever a l yea rs now a n d through the efforts of t hose clubs, we a ll ca n still rid e the Mill ican Va lley area . A rra sm i th a nd Ziegler hav e cha nged their thinking about closing Millican Valley, but they had changed before the meeting in Portland, The P rin eville offi ce had received well ove r 200 letters from conce rn ed riders and this is what changed their minds. It takes the efforts of many people, not one individual , to continue the necessary cooperation with the government agencies in order to use our land , Guy Griffin is an occasional desert racer and not necessarily aware of the cooperation, time and work involved in staging a race on BLM land due to regulations. He and Steve Doane, neither one motorcycle club members of any club I'd like to make a comment in response to Mr. Barker's letter (May 16) on your coverage of the AMA N a tiona l Motocross Seri es - or you r 'cover age on any ra ce for that matter, Motorcycle magazines are two to th ree months behind your coverage, Cycle N ews provides good reports , photos and up to date info on what's; happening in the world of motorcycle II racing. And , I don't need the " u p , close and personal" type of Howa rd , Cosell reporting which Mr. Barker seems to enjoy . ' I particu larly enjoy the Winston Pro Series and the National Motocross Series , I co ngra tulate you on a fine paper and a nxiously .await m y next co py. R ,W. MARSHALL Tacoma, WA Moto-X Fox thanks LOP Moto-X Fox would like to publically tha nk Ma rty Moates a nd Lorenz O ffn er of LOP for thei r assistance in ~ining accept a nce to Grand P rix events in Eu ro pe for ou r ri der, J im Turner. As you ma y know , J im was refused entry at th e Dutch 250c c Grand Pri x. He a lso h ad difficulties t the Italian and Belgian rounds . but thanks to the help of Ma ny and Lorenz, he di d gain entry at these two , We are sorry tha t , Marty was inj u red and hence cou ld not re p rese nt the USA at these events, but appreciate his efforts to help Jim ride by offering to give up his entry , I think that their action can serve as a worthy model to all motocross riders. Although our riders a a d their riders compete for victory on the track, they are still willing to assist in the spirit of true sportsmanship. GEOFFREY T , FOX President, Moto-X Fox , Inc.
