The turnout 44 of riders was below normal, probably due to the exciting announcement that Bob Dole was running for President (for some unknown reason, he not only failed to make the announcement at the races, h~ didn't even show up). Even the presence of the renowned and prestigious Fupped Duck Racing Team didn't seem to influence Bob Dole or' the turnout . A good da y of racing on a welI laid-out tr ack was marred by two crashes which sent the riders to the hospital with possibl e broken bones. It was a relief to see the promoters make th e wise decision not to run any motos unless an ambulance was at the track. Racing was delayed but the safety factor far outweighed the inconvenience. ' The izs« Expert class saw J .D . Sanderson power his way out of the first tum In the lead , folIowed by "Dynamite" Dan Hoover and Craig Coslett. The riders stayed close toge t her for a couple laps until Sanderson got out of shape exiting a tu m . setting up Coslett ,for a sweep from third to first . Hoo ver also snuck by while J.D . was sliding around . The moto ended with Coslett in the lead, Hoover in second, then Sanderson, Ku rt Johnston , and Mark Newlin. The second moto had Sanderson .again in the lead, chased by Coslett and "Dyn am ite" Dan. By the fourth lap, Craig displaced Sanderson for the lead, and held it to the end with J.D . only a few feet behind. Hoover followed in for third and Newlin fourth. The first 250cc Expert moto was red flagged after the second lap when early leader Dave Emerick felI in a set of whoops, and was taken to the hospital with a possible broken hip. On the restart , J.D. Sanderson took the lead and pulledaway for jhe moto win . "Dynami te" Dan jumped offhis 125cc and came in second, followed by Kevin Wagoner : Jon Ungerer, and Jesse Wessels. J.D . used the power of his Honda to pull off his fourth holeshot of the day and his second 250cc moto win . He was ch ased to the finish by "Dynam ite" Dan, Wagoner, Wessels , and Ungerer. Wayne Lanning led the Mini charge into the first tum, with Da rrin Taylor and Jim Rose in hot pursuit. It took only two laps for Rose to take over the lead and he stayed out front for the win. Lanning tailed in for second and Darrin Taylor third. Jim Rose didn't have any hassles over the lead in the second moto; he stayed out front from start to fin ish. Lanning scored another second and Damn Taylor was th ird. Consistency was not the order of the day in the 100cc class. J im Herman 'won both motos, but there was a th ree way tie for second with John Fekas , winning .ou t. Da vid Green third , and Bob Peterson fou rth. .'. Fifteen 125cc Juniors blasted off the line in pursuit of early leader Dennis Kracht. On the second lap , Dennis fell, turning the lead over to Stan Brown', with Kurt Ro ss and Jeff Montgomery in tow. Ross felI on the third lap alIowing Montgomery and Kracht by. Jeff made his move for the lead on the last la p, dropping Brown to second. Ross stuffed his Suzuki under Kracht two turns from the fin ish for third. . . Jeff Montgomery didn't want any problems with passing riders for. th e lead, so he took command from the beginning. Kurt Ross was in second, 'Dud e Morgan third, and Stan Brown ,fourth . Ross parted company with his bike on the second lap, while Brown moved !lP to second; chased by Rod Steinmetz and Dude Morgan. Montgomery pulIed awa y for the moto win, folIowed by Brown. Ross came back after ano ther ' fall for third , followed by Morgan and Kracht. The 250cc class wa s- sm all but provided some exc iting racing. Curtis Eveleigh brought his Yamaha in for first place both motos; but not without moto long dices with the imm ort al Leroy Moon (Larry Chautal) and Gary Yeager. The one-and -only Le roy Brown "ca ptu red the Open Junior class with 2· 1 moto finishes . Mark Bantam was second with a first and second for the day. Perry Davis tops Texas Runaway Bay Enduro By Margaret Carter BRIDGEPORT, TX , MAY 6 Maico-mounted Perry Davis took the overall A class win at the First Annual Runaway Bay Enduro with a one-point score. Next best , and 250·A gold went to Husky-mounted Steve Whitworth with six points. The overall B class top scorer was Robert Dreggois on a KTM with 12 points. . With the Women and Juniors riding an abbreviated course, PhylIis Hayes turned in a score of 26 points to take the Women's overalI trophy. Young Ray Leatherwood performed well also, . with his score of only four points taking first place in the 16 and under class . Milton Wendrock took first place in the Senior Men 's class with his 28 point score. The starting line saw S40 entrants try the Bridgeport Lions Club sponsored layout, a tricky course that .alIowed only 95 to fin ish the 88· m ile event . Br idgeport was a well -planned , well-laid-out ride put on by Ron Sides in conjunction with the Bridgeport Lions Club. Local Boy Scouts turned out to help direct traffic and to provide water for riders at the checkpoints. . The course was laid-out on private property, the ranches of five different families. Proceeds from the event went . toward retiring the debt on a community building in Bridgeport. It was good to see motorcycles welcomed by an entire town in this day of land closures:. . The course was a combination of tight woods, mesquite, open fields, river crossings, rocky hills and m iidholes. ' T he course worked well with good placementof checkpoints into and out of difficult sections . There were enough resets to keep the speeds down when the course hit the roads. . Judging from the wide spread of points between the A and B classes, and the remarks made by the riders, there were some tough sections that really put the rider's ability and bike preparation to the test . First run enduros on virgin land usually leave something to be desired ; like a trail. Although course markings were skimpy in many places, it was obvious that a lot of course clearing had been done. With half of a Texas county behind this event. next 'year's Bridgeport has got to be a winner. The Runaway Bay Enduro was the ninth enduro in the 1978-79 Texas State Championship Enduro Circuit . With only the Concho Enduro at San Angelo. Texas, left on the schedule. the competition for overalI standings is really hot. Overall A class leader is Perry Davis, with Joe Dixon and Steve Whitworth in second and third . Overall B class top man is Andrew Cooksey, with James Humphrey ' r u n n ing second and Ken Watkins following with third. Results OVERALL A: PerryDavi. (1). OVERALL B: Robert Dreggois112).
