Fools Gold'Ten By Bruce Marhenke EO R GETOWN , CA, MAY 5 • al ifomia End u ro R ide rs Assoia tion North held their 10th n nual Fool's Gol d Enduro des ite p redictions of rain for the eekend. The first riders left the st art t 7 :31 a .m . under cloudy skies; icture perfect wea ther co ndi tions uring the p revious week had foo led ost of the riders into not being pre· ared at a ll for what Mother Nature had n store for them on race day . Rou ghly 15 riders started t he event .which egan on a fast easy trail with perfect raction . . Bu t about I I miles out the fun egan. The first obstacle occurred at ock Creek, which was flowing quite apidly; there were only a couple of good lines through the creek , otherwise, up to the tank you'd go . After Rock Creek a steep rock strewn hill had to be nego t ia ted. This particular section of the enduro is usally run by the club since it's such a toughie. It was so rough, in fact, tha t it broke a Maico's back right at the steering head . About 9;15 a.m . , the predicted rains came down so hard that riders thought for sure they were in Sawmill country. Checks one and two saw most riders more or less on time. But the ' section before check three was an 18 mph off-camber, root riddled path that was _so slick and rough that over 25 riders called it quits at 36 miles. By this time , the fireroads were a TT 500's paradise. Competitors felt like Jay Springsteen, flinging it into every corner. Just after check three a short muddy uphill caused a semi-bottleneck that became impassable as the day went on. Q uick thinking on the part of club members pu t a halt to what could have ended the entire event and they re routed around the obstacle. Once past this ' problem , rain became fearless to the riders. Creeks were swollen right up to the crankcases ' a nd due to steamed -up goggles , eyes became little red balls. A quick mud strewn trail continued for about 15 miles to the gas check. Because of slippery , wet conditions , many riders were forced to push down the three mile fireroad before gas. It was beginning to get downright nasty. Cold temperatures combined with wet leathers forced another high percentage of riders to retire. From the gas check on, tight muddy trails coupled with more uphills which a nother portion of riders could not negotiate. Finishing up the enduro , riders found themselves coming up the usual start/finish trail . Some felt the urge to call it quits when the trail wound right t hrough the ca m pground and continued on. By now the weather was a nightma re. Ra in was co ming d own so hard campfires could not be lit. About 10 more miles of tight twisty brush ladden trail awaited. Down a ca nyon a nd back up aways and then down to the finish lin e at over 100 miles . Some riders let a sig h of rel ief while others just co llapsed from sheer exhaustion and exposure. All the riders would like to thank all the club members for assisting them when trouble struck. This year's Fool Gold Ten will definitely be remembered! • 8 o e 8 o o Whether it's a championship event or a long push back to the truck, don't take a chance with inf erior quality.
