"SuperMay" continues at Corona By Ron lawson CORONA , CA, MAY II Spectators came out by the droves to Corona Raceway to see the area's top 250cc Pros battle for the $1000 to be awarded to that class in the second race of "SuperMay." They weren't disappointed either, as they were treated to stadium style qualifiers and a main event that held some very exciting racing and , aside from an unfortunate incident at the end of the final, the night went smoothly. The first qualifier saw Don Griewe (Kaw) put in a flawless performance to take the win with a good 17 -second lead after holding the top spot from start to finish . Jerry Raymer (Yam) took second ahead of LOP's Gary Denton ( Ya m) and DG 's John Greenway (Yam). Also transferring to the main were Mat Devi ch (Ka w) and Bob Broten (Yam). It was the second qualifier that held the action . Steve Bauer: now Honda mounted with help from factory MX manager Gunnar Lindstrom, shot into the lead when Jim Hoover (Yam) fell in the first turn . Before one lap was complete, however, Bauer bobbled on his unfamiliar machine and let Ron Turner take over. Then Ba uer started feeling pressure from Yamaha's Rex Staten and he didn't like that a bit, so on the very next lap . he retook the lead. The three riders were so close in the following laps tha t they were, at ti mes , g oing off the jumps in formation and 'd iving into the turns together. But Bauer's pace beg an to suffer in the late laps as he made more and more mistakes. First Turner got by and then Staten knocked off both of them and went on to the checkers. Matt Tedder (Suz) got fourth after battling with Andy Northrup and Danny Jean , also on Suzukis. The consolation moto put Marty Miller (Suz), Jim Tarantino (Suz) and . Randy Fleming (Suz) into th e- main event. Bauer had the cash .in his eyes when he blasted int o the lead of the final. Turner was right behind him off the line , but when they came around at the end of lap one, Staten was in second. Bauer had bu ilt up a strong lead in tha t first la p, and although Staten was riding with h is usual skill , it was lap seven before he caught up to ' the DG rider. Staten then held it wide open over a difficul t section in on e of the track's tighter turns to squeeze al ongside th e leader. The two riders collid ed and Bauer went down . He was quick to remount before Turner got within sight, but Staten and th e lead were long gone. In the remaining laps, Staten, Bauer and Turner kept the top three sp ots .wh ile Greenwa y and Denton followed . At th e finish lin e , tempers were still hot over the way the lead had changed hands, and what started·as a shouting match ended up as a fist fight between Staten and Bauer. The absurd incident was put to an immediate stop b y track officials and both riders were fined for th eir total la ck of professionalism and warned against any future displays. Staten had a much less controversial win in the Open class wh ere he took his works 420 to two eas y wins . First time Pro Florence Manapany (Suz) took a distant second ahead of Ken Taylor (Suz) and Gr eg Gibboney (Ya m) . Resu lts MINI BEG: 1. Bart Albin (S uzl; 2. Bill Contz IVam); 3.
