Behind him came Tim Tolar on his new Maico and Greg Blackwell riding his Can-Am. ~ard was way back in 10th and Reid a couple of places farther downstream. By lap five Ward was up to sixth place and Reid was hot on his ta il. Huff Hadley had slipped past Tolar into second and Blackwell had fallen back to fifth behind Yamaha rider Tim Lunde. . Reid found a way around Ward and then a lap later he went by Lunde and Blackwell, Ward followed a couple of laps la ter just as Reid blew by Tolar. Hadley droppe? out .wi~h mechanical problems, leaving Reid In second right behind Tarantino who held him off for two laps before ,the Honda teamster took over the lead. W ith the race nearing the end, Ward charged up into second and began to pressure Reid but the checkered flag came out and Re id was first . Lunde took third place from Tarantino on the last lap and Tolar was fifth . When th e gate dropped for the second moto , Tarantino again grabbed the lead burthis time Ward was breathing down his neck and took the lead away on th e second lap. Third through sixth places were very close with four riders i n conten tion : Blackwell, Lunde, Tolar and Reid. Lunde got around Blackwell and Re id passed Tolar . Tarantinc;> dropped o~t leaving Ward well out m front. Reid moved in behind Lunde who was cruising in second and passed him to begin reeling in Ward at a tremendous rate. About halfway th rough the race Reid caught up to Ward and the two factory riders got real serious. Lap after lap they raced tail to tail and side by side with Ward some~ow stayi~g just ahead. Then on t~e big do~hill jump, Reid changed lines cumng to the inside and passing Ward in midai r with the throttle wired. Ward wasn 't through and nearly regained the lead at the bottom of the hill but Reid held him off. Ward tried to repass several times on the next lap. Then, with only three laps left , the chain broke on Ward's bike and the diminu itive Kawasaki rider was finished. Reid had clear sailing to the finish as second place Lunde was far behind. Pete Snorteland put his Honda in to third place and went home with the third overall money behind Lunde and Reid. . Bill Hagen won- both motes of the Open Pro class aboard his mighty Maico. Hagen really opened up a huge lead in the second moto and just cruised in for the win , looking smooth and fast . Bob Rutten kept his Husky in the hunt to finish second overall and Steve Fry rounded out the topthree on his Yamaha. Andy Kirker led the 125cc Pro class to the finish in both motes looking fantastic on his little Yamaha. Suzuki rider Craig Gormley motored in for second. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Bill Hogen IMei); 2 .
