Besides Riverside, there will be ND points at Sears Point on june 3' and Ontario on june 10. Bates will be a t Sea rs Point on june 24 and Ontario on the 10th. The race program started with th e 250cc GP. and Eddie Lawson didn't leave any chances to the competition and especially Mark Homchick (Haynes Manual Yam ) as they battled during the first laps of the eight-lap race. john Glover and Mike Baeder (Triple jack Construction) were doing the same thing behind the leaders. Before the halfway mark. Lawson was out of immediate danger. with Homchick a few seconds behind him . Attention then concentrated on the Glover/Baeder battle, very intense since th e drop of the green flag. On the last lap on the back straight Edd ie Lawson broke t he tank strap. a nd it started to fall off. breaking th e gas petcock. "I had to coast the bike all th e way to th e finish line , a nd I barely. finished ahead of Ma rk Homchic k," said Eddie. The 500cc Open GP race was the first rac e for Wes Cooley (Kal Guard Yam) since his performances in England and France. He was racing withou t the AMA restrictors pla tes on the carburetors as did Harry Klinz m ann (Mr. AI's Restaurant Yam ). but Bruce Hammer (Kal Guard Yam ) did run with them . "That way I ca n test my bike for th e Loudon Na tiona l," exp lai ned Hammer. At th e sta rt of th e ra ce, Klinzmann was leading Hamm er , Cooley and Gil Martin . It took two la ps for to pass his Kal Guard teammate a nd then Wes .. on th e follo wing lap he also went by Harry , Martin did something sim ila r and passed Hammer to capture third . On the next to last lap , Klinzmann recaptured the lead , and a close finish was about to ta ke place. "W es and I were very close in turn six. We went by some slower riders and I got them in the inside in seven , but Wes got stuck. All I had to do was to hold him until t he checkered . I fi nish ed half a bikelength ahead of him ," recalled Harry. In the 601cc /Open Su persrreet , Reg Pridmore (Vetter Kaw ) d idn't have much to do to assure his firs t place. Steve Mallonee and Chuck Parrne, both on 1000 Kawasakis, tried to give him some problems in the first laps of the race . Mallonee retired on th e second lap after losing his countershaft sprocket . Parme th en had just to assure h is runner-up posit ion. Pridmore had some problems in his apparently easy rid e: "T he new pipe was d ragging in turn nine and lifting the bike . I al so had some clut ch adjustment pro ble ms, but beside that the b ike r a n re a lly smoo t h ," comm ented the AMA Supe rb ike Champion. Result s 250 GP: 1. Eddie I..awson (Yaml ; 2.
