(A bove) Winner Neil Hudson prepares to swoop on Jaak Van Ve lthoven (1). (Below) An anxious Gennady Moiseev looks for Hudson. Points leader Hakan Carlqvist was confident and took a 3-1 second. World Championship MX Series - Round four Hurlson scores agam By Jack Burnicle GENK , BELGIUM , MAY 6 Englishman Neil Hudson, aboard a Maico , backed up his victory in Italy the previous weekend with -another win in the Belgian round of the 250cc World Championship MX Series , and effectively est ablished himself as the principle threat to present p oints le ader Hakan Carlq vist . 14 . Carlqvist, a Swedish Husqvarna rider, .rook second overall from reigning World Champion Gennady Moiseev and his KTM , despite, spark ling local legend Harry Everts taking his works Suzuki to a popular brace of wins in two scintilla ting motes. Everts, the current 125cc MX World Cha m pio nship poi nts leader. was not eligib le for championship points in the 250cc class. The opening enc ounter saw Moiseev hu rtle into the first tu m ahead of J aak van Velthoven (KTM), Rolf Dieffen bach (Uni -Trak Ka wasaki) and Hudson, but Carlqvist, taking a wide line to " avoid trou ble ," was ca ught amid- ships and flipped off the Husk y. For tunately he emerged unscathed , and after pausing for a few moments to ~traight~n out th.e front end , took off In dazzhng pursUit of the field . Jim Pomeroy (Bultaco) was an early retirement when he and Hans 'Maisch (Maico) collided whilst wrestling for eleventh slot on the second lap. Pomeroy's right leg somehow jam med beneath the Maico's rear fender and he was dragged off his bike, badly wre nching his left knee and putting himself out of both motos p rior to a hospital visit for X-rays the following day, By la p six, Hudson was right with Moiseev, Dieffenbach had caught van Velthoven, and Everts was set to pounce on Georg es Jobe (Suzuki) , while Carlqvist had lasered his way through into seventh spot. At the-halfway stage, Moiseev, Hud son and Dieffenbach, absolutely nailed together at the front , were gradually being reeled in by an inspired Everts , who finally dived under Dieffenbach at the end of the finishing straight, repeated the dose on Hudson one lap later , and snatched the lead from Moiseev to deafening applause from the partisan crowd. The flustered Russian Number One almost dropped his KTM and Hudson seized the opportunity to obtain a maximum points score by holding off the battling World Champion in a tense final quarter. Moiseev's KTM teammate Vladimir Kavinov had never been remotely in contention and retired from twentyfifth position with ignition failure on lap seven, while Canadian champ Jim T urner (Fox Shox Honda) fin ished a battling fifteenth in front of Jean Paul Mingels (Ya m) . Race two started with ou t th e lame .J im Pomeroy, J a roslav Fa lla (Cl), who had also hurt a leg early in t he first clash. and Raymond Boven's earthdigging pa dd le tire , victim of an in junction by the FIM jury between motos. Hectic racing amongst the first five men pu lled them well clear of the pack, Everts eventually coming out on top from Carlqvisr , Moiseev, Hudson andJobe at the halfway stage, Moiseev stalled the KTM and let Hudson and J obe through , the Englishman hanging in fine style , while the young Belgian lost his chain two laps from home. Turner was forced out after a couple of desultory tours when one of the hefty rocks which profusely littered the track struck a knee he had hurt in Italy and he retired in some pain. Rear damping problems put paid to Kavinov's eighth placing on the ninth lap , but Everts; with a split exhaust chamber, and Carlqvist, whose shocks had partially compressed and jammed, both survived comfortably in front of Hudson and the steaming Moiseev . • Results 1.
