Number one Open class desert plate holder Bob Balentine was also in the race but he crashed early on in the race and had to return all the way to his home in Mojave without even a full race for a reward . Some people just won 't take no for an answer . When Mike Burnett found out he didn't have enough money to enter the co nt est , he drove from Racing World in Trabuco Canyon to his home in Riverside and back just to get another five bucks to race. Unfortunately, though he made the trip in an hour and a half and got back just after his class had started their run. Everyone felt bad about Burnett making the drive for nothing , especially with the tight gas situation. so the sign up girls talked him into entering int o the next race. Then the problem was that Burnett stilldidn't have enough money to enter because it was a larger class so he went around asking for donations and came up with $18 .50 and the sign up girls chipped in the final $1.50 to make $20 so he could race. But Burnett's troubles weren't over because when they asked to see his class card he turned out to be classed as a Mini rider who says he just moved up to 250cc bikes but hasn't had his classification changed yet. Problems were still growing because the class he was trying to enter was the Open 'class and whether Burnell was on a Mini or 250 didn't matter, his bike wasn't -an Open. Still the girls asked him what size his bike was just for the record and he answered, "Well it isn't a 400cc," to which they responded "Then it must be a 370cc," and entered him in the race. No one really thought his 250cc bike would stand up in the Open class, especially with a rider just moved up from Minis but the District 37 stewards approved his entry just so he could ride and everyone had a good laugh as ail the Open bikes and one 250cc rolled up to th e line. Such a joke. But no one was laughing when .Bu rn ett not only copped ~ t he .holeshot but stayed in front of the Open bikes all the way to win. To make everything fair , Burnett was awarded a special trophy while the first three bikes across the line in the Open class · received the usual first , second, and third place trophies. Those riders were Joe Turnbaugh , Dave Mock and Gary Coffman. Results SATURDAY: RACE ONE 1. Nate Sciaqua (Yernl; 2. Bill Saltzman : IMai; 3. Jim O·NealIC·Al. I RACE TWO: 1. Mike Sil
