L echien six for six atCMMCMX By Rod Eschenburg SAN DIEGO , CA , MAY 6 The " Racin' Machine," Ronnie Lechien, just simply ruined the largest fiel d of Expert riders of the year with a n incredible dis- 34 play of high flying rid ing at the revamped Ba rona O aks Raceway. The R& D Suzuki rider scored a clean sweep of both the Stock and Modifed Expert 80cc Minicycle classes and also swept the Specia l 105cc Mini class . O nly in t he S tock class was Lech ien even remotely pressured as Team Kawasa ki rider Kenny Dunlap was able to move into the lead in the early laps of each moto: but at the checkered flag it was always Lechien for six straightl While Lechien's exploits kind of overshadowed the rest of t he day's racing; some other great performances were turned in especially the two straight, four for four effort in the Stock and Modifi ed M in i Int ermediates by Suzuki rider Scott Hewatt who sho u ld be joining the Experts shortly. Attesting to th is is th e second in the !05cc Min is by Hewa tt. In t h e 9·11 Intermediates, Kurr ie H endrickson (Suz) gave t he large crowd a grea t display of courage and fortitu de in win ning the Stock Mini class after _a very hard spi ll in the Mod ified d ivision. In between races Kurtie was observed hobbling aorund , but when the gate went down on tha t second moto he was all racer and never looked back for a two stra igh t blast. Lots of new faces in the Motorcycle classes Sunda y, as maybe the gas crunch kept them near home. The 125cc Intermediates were really torrid , with Kawasaki rider Woody Carlson taking the Stock division over first timer Tim Theodore ; Theodore then reversed the order with a tie -breaker win over Carlson in the Mod ified go round . T o give you an idea of th e co m petition in t h e Mod ified s. Theodor e did it with a 5-1 placing! In Novice action, Ya maha rider Ga ry Rod rigu ez, fresh from his do u ble at Speedway 117 , did the expected in the Sto ck 125cc class but was upset in the Modifed 100cc class by Da nn y Ray in a tie -breaker second moto. The biggest field of Pee W ees (nine riders) ever was on hand an d th e "dimunitive dynamos" really went at it with Clifton Stuart going two for two over favorite J am ie Conney with Las Vegas rider "King Richa rd " Saxton a close third. Barona Oaks cont inues their first and third Sunday scheduling. Results 80cc MINICVCLECLA SSES STOCK EX; 1. Ronnie Lechien (R&O Suzl: 2. Kenny Dunlap IKawl; 3 . David Hopwood lKawI. MOD EX: 1.
