MAy'I3 The first licks of summer greeted those rnotocrossers fortun ate enough to find gas .after sneaking out of the house to spend Mother's Day here with the Continental Motosports Club, In the first 500cc Pro moto , Mark Mobs used the reputed power of his Can-Am to fling himself into the first tum before the rest of the crowd. Unfortunately. for him , the tum reo quired even greater deceleration and he ended up killing his motor, exiting tum one in last place. . In the meantime , Lee Ramage (Mai) seized the lead. He led for over a . lap. losing it to David Gerig (Esc) on the uphill . Moving up steadily from fourth , tho.ugh, was Husky-mounted Alan Smith. He tagged along behind Gerig for a _ few laps and zipped by him off the ledge onlap seven . remaining unchallenged the rest of the moto. Mike Tripes (Suz) and Chip Howell (Hus) finished 3-4 while Mobs came back to wrest fifth from Ken Yarnell (Mai) . . For the second moto, Tripes had a new rear tire fitted to his ,scoot and prom p tly grabbed the hole shot. Howell got on th e gas , pu shing him back to second before th e end of a lap. T ripes eventually dropped out of the contest . complaining of a strange handling mount on th is hot day. Howell kept his lead for a good portion of the race. It was Smith though. who had it when it counted ~ at the flag - taking the overall win handily. J Howell's 4-2 tally netted him third behind Gerig who cruised in third on a deflated tire the last moto. Mobs and Yarnell matched their first .m oro finishes. ' . In 'the 250cc Pros , Tony Wanket (Ya m ) took immediate command of the first moto . and appeared to be headed for a sure win until Lady Luck fr owned on his fr ont brake cable forci ng him into the DNF r anks . ' Steve Bauer on his Tim Buck-tu ned DG Honda took it in from there. Gary Jones kept him in sight until lap 11 when the gearbox on his Ammex stuck in fourth, dropping him to fifth at the checkered with a frying clutch. Andy Northrup (SoP) snared the runner-up slot while new Pros Dan Worley (PCS) and Mike Schoffstall (Hon) rode in next. . Jones got things squared away in time for the second moto and was never touched after the first lap . taking a convincing win . Bauer was forced to ' content himself with second after he fell over in a tight tum while making a ":In at and being slowed by a pair 0 Fox shocks that weren't working. Northrup was closing in third at the end wit.h Kirk Grissom (Hon) and Worley m fourth and fifth practicalIy the whole way. Randy Hess seemed confident that he would do welI prior to the start of the I25cc Pros due to his training program enabling him to handle the heat better than the others. It must have been effective as he was never headed in the first moto , remaining clean out in front. Rick Johnson (Ya m ) worked up from a poor stan to cla im second at the ha lfway point. His efforts were frustrated , though , when his bike quite three laps from the finish . . That allowed Cliff Lett (Ya m) back mto second. followed by Tripes.
