out fir st and got ba ck on th e ga s jus t a littl e qu ick er than Mark and made the dash for the finis h lin e. with 16-yearold La nce King rig ht in t here for thi rd. In scra tc h racin g Steve Bast again ea rned a transfer to the semi-fina l, but tha t's wh er e he stopped whe n he ca me up against his brother th e cu rrent Ch a m p a nd Ala n Christ ia n . Steve got thi rd , just behind Ch rist ia n e both Mike Bast a nd Christian were now sea ted in th e scratch main a long wit h Da ve Sims and Gene Woods . T his main eve nt was anyo ne 's guess. Right from the very sta rt, Woods was crash wall , flying right up agai nst th e _ rig ht wh er e he ge t t he most d rive, but I hat is the lon g way arou nd the track . Ch ristia n , on th e ot he r hand , too k th e short way, right on th e pole . H e is one of th e very few riders, alon g with Mik e Bast, who can put his front wheel right alongsid e of the tw o - in ch wide pipe and not cross it all the wa y through the turns. That was th e picture for a ll four laps - Christian sideways with his wheel on th e pol e and Mike looking like his reflection , just inches apart. Sims was trailing and Woods was on the far outside , leading through the turns , but because of the dist ance he had to tra vel b ack down'to ge t on the stra igh taway kept putting him in th ird place. Bast tried th e ou tside line in the last lap and , if anything. it cost him a few feet at the fin ish line . Christian was first . with Bast seco nd . Woods thi rd. Sims fourth . Just a bo ut the best race of the yea r. Dwight Hill deserves a look at. He picked up h is second main even.t of th e week in division two . starting on th e zero yard line and not losing a foo t of advantage in five laps to the checkered flag . Now when he ge ts mov ed back 10 ya rds and can still win . we just maysee a new fa'ce in d ivision one. None of the three young ladies made it into the main event this week. In div ision three , Frank Fo rsyth took home the gold. For those few fans . and announcer Larry H uffman, who tho ught th at I was too ha rd on Alan Christia n in las t week 's story , let me set the record stra ig ht. Alan a nd I ta lked a bout contact several times and he knows exactly wha t I was getting at : • It is not something he does with malice. He does not try to put anyone down. He does intimidate with his fulllock slides. That is not even the point I made last week . If you must put the blame somewhere. you could say I was trying to get across to all the officials. of which there. are six. that the rules should be the same for all three classes or divisions in speedway and that no one should be allowed to knock on anyone just because they have been riding for several years and know their way around the track in first d ivision. If the contact rules says "if you cause a rider to lose control or crash while passing. you ill be scored in last place." then let it be so . Results SAN BERNARO INO. 5116179 SCRATCH M AIN EVENT: 1.
