(Yamaha) who , after his part in the
big Salzburgring crash in 1977, was
understandably a little wary of taking
any chances.

nastics, was Ed i Stollinger on a
Kawasaki , heading home his race-long
riva l Patrick Pons (Yaham a) and Vic
Soussan on George Bea le's Yamaha .
But the drama of t he race was not
yet over . Young Ekerold, disturbed at
rumours that the winning Kawasaki
might be using something other than
standard fuel, slapped in'a protest just
as he had warned the factory people he
would . before the race even began.
"I am not tryi ng to tak e Kork's points awa y j ust for th e sake of the points. I
want them to find out once and for all
if.the rumours about the fuel are right.
If pro testing means losing frie nds in
:.the paddock, well that 's too bad. I
· sim ply want to know the tru th. " said
Jon .
The protest w as rejected by the jury
even though the Kawasak i had , by a
I sad coincidence, failed to have been
· parked in the technical enclosure after
the rac e.
n T he FIM official decided that that
was as much the organizers' fault as
I the fac tory team's, and by then it was
too lat e th e check the fuel.
The sidecar races failed to match
the entertainment of the solo battles.
'As expected. the additio nal World
Cham pionshi p for the latest sidecar
crea tions. inspired by the ea rly Seymaz
and Beo, was a damp squ id despite a
close tussle between Rolf Biland in his
latest ' LCR Yamaha car-like outfit .
and Alan Michel's new Seymaz.
, Biland went on to win the ra ce.
s which attracted onl y 14 starters, after
Michel's outfit broke a piston in the
closing stages. letting Bruno Hozer . on
· a simil ar outfit to Biland's, take ru nnerup spot.
I La ter in the da y hopes of a rare
Brit ish sidecar victory in the conven> tional sidecar race ended just a few
~ps from home when Dick Greasley
broke a piston on his Busch -Yamaha.
His departure let Swede Gate Brodin
(Yamaha) into number one spot, well
clear of a hectic dice between Siegfried
Schauzu (Yamaha) and Rolf Ste inhausen (Yamaha) .
Jock Taylor looked a good bet for a
top six place using last year's Windle
outfit un til th e rear hub brok e.
In the 125cc race Clive Horton .
Britain's sole representa tive, saw his
hopes of Ch ampionship points fizzle
out when his Morbidelli mysteriously
slowed, dropping him to fourteen th

Bartol (Morbedelli).
