In t heir heat race. Steve Eklund beat Springsteen to the checkered flag. They both ran far ahead of the pack in the National. but it was Springsteen in front all the WE. . ; - Round six y scot thriller second start, but Brow 's Klotz /Wiseco H ·D nailed down the lead on the back straight. Brow started pulling away , but Kidd, using a high outside line through tum two , occasionally got a tremendous drive off 'the corner and closed on Brow drama tically . Robinson , the Budweiser -sponsored northern Californian, held third and defeated the late lap attemp;s of Mickey Fay and Tom Berry to take it away . Michigan rookie Scott Parker shot into the lead of the last heat, but slid int o the ha ybales on the following lap to bring out the red flag . Scott Pearson (H ·D West .H ·D) took the lead off th e restart, with Ted Bood y. Parker and Hank Scott in tow . Pearson and Boody . who was riding Sonny Burres' down -pipe Harley-Davidson, set out in front while Scott (Patrick Racingl Sure-Fire/Barnes/Branch H -D) bat tled with Parker until Parker again took a trip out into the haybales , this time sta ying upright. Another rookie , John W incewi cz, was in the m iddle of all this for a few laps, until he dropped back behind Eddie Lawson . The first four positions were set , though Bood y made a few attempts on Pearson 's lead, withou t success. Novice Invitational The firs t running of a No vice In vita tional at Ascot saw the top two Novices, po int-wise, get out front and sta y th er e. Scott Podergois (Yam) , who had won several main events th is yea r at Ascot, took the lead over Rich Arnaiz (C·A) . The distance between t he m, about two and a ha lf bikelengths , seldom .va r ied and . Podergois took a close win after leading all 10 laps. In third was Ben Zakarian (Kaw), followed by Dennis Camp (Suz). Sem is Brad Hurst again read the starter' exceptionally well and jumped into top spot in the first semi . Randy Goss (Wi seco / Klot z/ KRW H ·D) banzai'd his way through th e first two turns' to grab second. Goss then ca ught Hurst in th e first turn of t he next lap and started stretching out a lead. Ronnie Jones (Vipe r Ra cing Wheels H ·D) also passed Hu rst, bu t he was a long way behind Goss. T ha t le a d wa s shortened 'd rastica lly on the seventh lap , when Goss bobbled very badly in t he m iddle of tum two . Goss d idn't bobble again and took th e single transfer to the National , leaving 'J ones and Scott Drake to lead the others to th e tro phy race. Scott Parker (Klotz/ W iseco/ Ri ck Toldo H ·D ) was determined to make the National field . He shot to th e front of th e second semi , but found himself behind Edd ie Lawson and John W incewicz at the end of one lap. Parker disposed of Lawson in a hurry , t hen fought hard with Wincewicz for four laps. Parker found himself in front after another lap in which th e lead was excha nged three times . He · held on to win over Wincewicz , Lawson and Mickey ' Fay . The time made the race the fastest 10 laps of the evening. A br eak after th e last heat allowed track officials to water and g roo m the track , which helped th e times cons iderably. Junior In vitational John Burnett (Ya m) lat ch ed onto the lead of the 12-lap Junior Invitation al . purs ued ' by Da ve Busby (H ·D) , Steve Monger (Yam) and Keith Day ( Ya m). Jeff Han e y, r id ing the Am erican H onda-supported XR 500 singl e, worked his way from row two to third at the halfway point. T he n, in a single lap, he passed both Busby a nd Burnett to take the lead. He held it to the finis h while Day and Monger edged out Busby for third and fourth. In a battle further ba ck in th e pack, California's Dorothy Rowe bested New York 's Arlette Sm ith for top woman. Trophy race The trophy race belonged to Oklahoma's RonnieJones from sta rt to finish. He took the holeshot , and then stretched out a consid erable distance on the field . Tom Berry, ri ding a Sonny Burres Triumph that he'd first ridden in time trials, and Mickey Fay held second and third at first, but Eddie Lawson slid his Sal Acosta Ha rley-Davidson by them just past, the midway point. Ber ry and Fay held thi rd and fourth to the .end , with Wayne Rainey, John W incewicz and Scott Drake crossing th e line en masse, after them . (Continued to pag e 10) 7
